Rachel Lake
MT. BAKER-SNOQUALMIE NATIONAL FOREST, WA :: I joined Jake and Jayson today for a hike up to Rachel Lake. We were expecting cool temperatures and overcast skies, but when we arrived at the trailhead, it was warm and sunny. It had been a while since I last hiked this trail, and I had forgotten how nice it is. The first few miles are relatively flat as the trail weaves in and out of the forest through a lush valley, crossing a stream once or twice. The last mile gains elevation quickly over rocks and mud. Along the way are a few waterfalls, one of which we dunked our heads into to cool off. When we crossed over the lip of the lake, we were surprised by chilly winds and churning clouds. We quickly changed out of our damp clothes, snapped a few photos, and headed back down.
The trail to Rachel Lake is eight miles roundtrip and gains 1600′ feet, mostly on the final mile. From Rachel Lake, trails continue to Rampart Lakes and Alta Mountain.
