Lake 22
MT. BAKER-SNOQUALMIE NATIONAL FOREST, WA :: Kristie’s dad was visiting this weekend, and he wanted to go on a hike. I suggested Lake 22, a fairly easy trail with a variety of scenery, including old-growth trees, waterfalls, and an alpine lake at the base of Mt. Pilchuck. It’s always been a favorite of mine, especially during winter and spring when there’s still some snow.
The trail climbs 1200′ in 2.5 miles. It’s gradual, but you’ll still break a sweat getting to the top. If you’re with Kristie’s dad, you’ll stop a few times along the way and listen to many stories about his younger days. That was fine, because the weather was nice, and we were having a great time. There was no reason to rush up the mountain.
Besides, I didn’t want to push the risk of anyone in our group suffering a heart attack, sprained ankle, or a bad slip on the snow. It’s so easy for newbie hikers in their sneakers to trip and get injured while their unsupported ankles are rolling around on uneven terrain and their eyes are staring at the scenery. I know this from personal experience. I’ve become quite the expert at falling!
Fortunately, everyone made it just fine. A couple slips and bruises were the worst of it. The effort was rewarded with a great view and the sound of mini-avalanches roaring down the surrounding peaks.
