YMCA CAMP ORKILA, EASTSOUND, WA :: We sent our teenage babies to Camp Orkila on Orcas Island, their first overnight summer camp. They dreaded going all year, but we insisted it would be a good experience for them to develop their independence, meet some new friends, and have some fun out in nature. Kristie has fond memories of when she went as a teen and back again as a camp counselor.
It was tough being away from them and mostly out of touch for a week! No electronics, no texts or calls are allowed, just good old fashioned written letters. It took a few days for us to receive their first letters, which were all gloom and sadness, so we worried for them the entire week until anxiously picking them up from the ferry. Turns out only the first night was tough with feeling homesick, but the rest of the days were filled with new friends and dozens of fun activities! We loved having them back and listening to them share all their amazing experiences! They’re keeping in touch with their cabin mates, and eager to do it again next summer!
The photos are a mix from their camp counselors and their own disposable cameras.
