TERWILLIGER HOT SPRINGS, BLUE RIVER, OR :: On the way to Terwilliger Hot Springs from Bend, I enjoyed twisting through the beautiful unburnt areas of the Deschutes and Willamette National Forests. However, I sure enough came across another recent wildfire area, which wasn’t surprising as much of Central Oregon has burned recently. What was unexpected was the huge lava field that I had to drive through. It’s the remnant of Belknap volcano and a few other cones that erupted about 1500 years ago. It was a fascinating landscape, framed by the picturesque Three Sisters. I later learned that many desperate settlers were forced to pass this way in their wagons back in the day.
