SOUTHWEST VACATION DAY 1 :: JOSHUA TREE NATIONAL PARK, CA :: To kick off the summer, Kristie and I ventured south for an eight day vacation in the Southwest. We flew from Seattle to Las Vegas and rented a little convertible, driving nearly 1,000 miles to follow our packed itinerary. It was a great trip!
Our first destination was Joshua Tree National Park. What an amazing place! Its mysterious, namesake trees dot the desert landscape amongst gigantic boulders and strange rock formations. There were many interesting areas to hike and explore, and it was fun to wander. Perhaps because of the heat, it wasn’t very crowded when we were there. In fact, we saw many nice campsites available, tucked here and there beside an impressive slab or between a ring of tilting monoliths. We read the rocks are remnants of massive mineral deposits that were once underground. The surrounding landscape eroded away to leave behind the spires, stone arches and balancing boulders.
