HOSMERS GROVE, HALEAKALA NATIONAL PARK, KULA, HI :: We wrapped up our Maui trip high on Haleakala, hunting for the increasingly elusive ʻIʻiwi in Hosmer Grove (elevation 7000’). Charlie was thrilled to catch several of them through the camera, but the photos don’t do justice to their rich vermilion plumage, traditionally important in Hawaiian featherwork. When not sighting the ʻIʻiwi, we enjoyed the eucalyptus scented trail and the volcano’s dynamic weather – fog, rain, sun, repeat.
