ANCIENT LAKES, QUINCY, WASHINGTON :: Ancient Lakes brought together basalt cliffs, bright blue water, waterfall, and wide-open desert skies, creating one of the most distinctive landscapes I have hiked in Eastern Washington. The contrast between the dry terrain and the lakes made nearly every part of the trail worth stopping to take in.
I also saw plenty of wildlife along the way, including a rattlesnake, a blue-tailed skink and many small lizards darting among the rocks. The unexpected encounters added another layer to an already memorable hike.
