San Diego Zoo
SAN DIEGO ZOO, SAN DIEGO, CA :: We missed the off-ramp exit for the San Diego Zoo and drove within a mile and of half of the Mexican border. A quick u-turn put us back on track, although I think I would have enjoyed a little time in Tijuana.
The San Diego Zoo is huge! I don’t know how we missed it. We only saw a small percentage of the animals, which was just fine, because the place got packed with crying kids and strollers. We were there primarily to see the pandas and koalas.
The three panda bears are isolated in a shady, quiet area. The amount of people allowed to see them is controlled. Fortunately, we were there early enough to avoid the long line that formed after us. The pandas were amazing to see, although they were sleeping nearly the entire time. I think they may be the cutest creatures on the planet, second only to Kristie.
Among the other highlights were the polar bears, a grizzly bear and a bunch of koala bears. It might have been a bear-themed day, only panda bears aren’t really bears, and koala bears, of course, are marsupials. Like the pandas, the koalas were all sleeping. They do this for 16-23 hours a day!

These photos are great, John! The pandas and koalas were the cutest, but I wish they had tried to wake up and move around a little for us. Lazy animals!
Awesome pictures, John. I like #1 and #10, those are my favorites, but they are all good shots. What time did you go? Reading a book called “Life a Pi”, you’ve probably read it. Talk a bit about zoos and the psychology of animals. Good read, you should pick it up if you haven’t read it already.
I was reading through the descriptions of “Life of Pi” on Amazon. It looks like a good book. I’ll pick it up!
Thanks,John
