WESTERN PRINCE WHALE WATCHING ADVENTURES, FRIDAY HARBOR, WA :: We took the kids out for their first wild orca encounter via Western Prince’s high speed Zodiac. Fortunately the waters were calm, we were warmly bundled, and we spotted several transient orcas, which are surging in numbers and can be seen almost everyday around the San Juans. Unfortunately, the resident J Pod are not faring as well and are now rarely seen inside the Salish Sea. The J Pod’s diet is almost exclusively reliant on the region’s salmon, and with those populations in decline, they venture further away to find them. The transient orcas (or Bigg’s Orcas) seem to eat anything, however, and are enjoying the bounty of seals in our area.
