ÞINGVELLIR – THINGVELLIR NATIONAL PARK, ÞINGVELLIR, ICELAND :: Today we drove the Golden Circle, starting with a hike through Thingvellir National Park, a UNESCO World Heritage Site for its cultural and geological significance. Thingvellir was an important site for early Viking settlers. It’s where they gathered for their annual Althing. It is also the only section of the Mid-Atlantic Ridge above sea level, exposing the splitting earth and placing Iceland on both the North American and Eurasian continental plates!
