WARDEN/JAIL ADMINISTRATOR

Summary:

Performs advanced managerial work in a correctional facility. Work involves administering policies and procedures to include custody, discipline, and welfare of offenders in the facility; and planning, assigning, and supervising the work of others. Works under limited supervision with considerable latitude for the use of initiative and independent judgment.

Responsibilities:

⮚ Plan, coordinate and direct the total administrative and programmatic activities of the facility.

⮚ Provide staff training, evaluate staff performance, and implement organizational and personnel actions in accordance with the Decision Analysis Table.

⮚ Develop departmental budgets, monitor, and control expenditures.

⮚ Develop and implement new and revised policies and procedures affecting finance, food service, health services, maintenance, human resources, security, programs, classification and case management, education, and recreation. Ensure each policy and procedure is reviewed annually.

⮚ Coordinate with Regional Warden on matters involving contract modification, future proposal preparation and negotiation.

⮚ Review shift assignments for security staff to ensure all shifts are adequately staffed to meet requirements of facility procedures and post orders. Ensure proper number of custodial supervisors and officers for the security of inmate labor force on work assignments and/or residing in the main unit building, coordinate, plan, and direct placement of all personnel in the event of riots, escapes, and other emergencies.

⮚ Monitor staff selection process of potential employees to ensure adherence to all applicable laws, company policy and state regulations and select qualified applicants to fill vacancies as needed.

⮚ In conjunction with human resources manager and LaSalle Corrections corporate human resources, direct the imposition of staff disciplinary action according to LaSalle Corrections’ personnel policy and procedures.

⮚ Direct preparation of work and other related reports on inmates for the classification committee and permanent record of inmates, showing progress and estimating rehabilitative prospects; direct inspections of living accommodations of inmates for proper sanitation, decide whether improvements are necessary and taking appropriate action where needed.

⮚ Oversee the overall maintenance of buildings and permanent improvements of the facility; direct and approve requisitions, inventory and issuance of all facility supplies, material and equipment.

⮚ Promote the development of positive social skills through modeling appropriate behaviors and intervening when inappropriate behaviors are observed. Provide regular feedback to staff regarding social skills procedures and intervention techniques.

⮚ Maintain accountability of staff, inmates, and property; adhere to safety practices.

⮚ It is expected that the incumbent shall perform other duties as assigned within his/her capabilities as determined by management.

⮚ Obtain a permanent jailer’s license from TCOLE.

⮚ Successfully complete the jail administrator’s exam required by the Texas Commission on Jail Standards.

⮚ Work closely with county sheriff and personnel from the Texas Commission on Jail Standards.

Knowledge and Skills

rules, and regulations preferred. .

8. Skill to communicate ideas and instructions clearly and concisely.

9. Skill to coordinate with other staff, departments, officials, organizations, and the

public.

10. Skills to plan, assign, and supervise the work of others.

11. Skill to prepare and maintain accurate records, files, and reports.

12. Skill in public address.

Education and Experience:

1. Sixty (60) semester hours from a college or university accredited by an organization recognized by the Council for Higher Education Accreditation (CHEA). An additional thirty semester hours from an accredited college or university may be substituted for one (1) year of non-supervisory experience. A Bachelor's degree in Criminal Justice or a related field from an accredited college or university may be substituted for two (2) years of the required non-supervisory experience.

2. Ten (10) years full-time, wage-earning adult correctional custody or adult criminal justice program administration experience to include six (6) years in the supervision of employees.

A. Ability to walk, stand, sit, crawl, kneel, push, stoop, twist, climb stairs, steps and ladders, reach above the shoulder, grasp, pull, bend repeatedly, identify colors, hear with aid, see, write, count, read, speak, analyze, alphabetize, lift and carry 45lbs, and over, perceive depth, operate a motor vehicle, operate motor equipment, use firearms, perform tactical discernment, and restrain assaultive persons.

Conditions include working inside and outside, excessive heat, cold, humidity, dampness and chill, dry atmosphere, excessive or intermittent noise, constant noise, fumes, smoke, gasses, grease, oils, dust, slippery or uneven walking surfaces, working around machines with moving parts and moving objects, radiant and electrical energy, working at heights, working on ladders, or scaffolding working closely with others, working alone, working protracted or irregular hours, using chemical agents, and traveling by car, van, bus, and airplane.

C. Equipment (machines, tools, devices) used in performing only the essential functions include computer and related equipment, typewriter, calculator, copier, fax machine, telephone, radio, firearms, handcuffs, waist and leg restraints, turn cranks on manual doors, tear gas canisters and weapons, VCR cameras, various locking systems, tractor trailer and automobile.

Pay: $75,000.00 - $85,000.00 per year
