Definition

Under general direction of the Director, Special Programs, performs a variety of liaison activities between the District's homeless or itinerant students, schools and parents to assure that this population receives needed services; identifies itinerant families and provides information regarding District programs, social programs and services; provides training and work direction to Community Advocate; provides oversight for coordination of projects supporting the District's homeless program and population as assigned. The ability to read, write and converse in English and Spanish is preferred.

Vacancy Information: There are multiple vacancies, full-time, 12 months/year at the middle school / high school sites. These are grant funded positions ranging from 18 months to four years with possibility of extension. Continuation of a grant funded position is contingent upon the availability of funding and/or program needs.

MINIMUM QUALIFICATIONS AND SPECIAL LICENSE OR LANGUAGE SKILLS


Education: Graduation from high school or equivalent GED. Associate's degree or education beyond an AA degree is preferred.

Experience: Three (3) years experienced working with students and parents in an advocate role or two years working as a School Community Assistant or a Community Advocate.

Special License, certification or other requirements:

  • Valid Class C California Driver License and use of private or alternative means of transportation is required
  • Proof of automobile insurance is required
  • The ability to read, write and converse in English and Spanish is preferred.
PHYSICAL REQUIREMENTS/DEMANDS

ESSENTIAL DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES

Essential duties and responsibilities of this class include but are not limited to:

  • Reads, writes and converses in English and another designated language (Spanish) is preferred
  • Performs a variety of liaison activities between the District's homeless or itinerant students, schools and parents to assure that this population receives needed services; identifies itinerant families and provides information regarding District programs, social programs and services
  • Provides training and work direction to Community Advocate
  • Regularly visit student families living in shelters, cars, garages, motels and other identifiable locations to assure parent involvement in school programs or services
  • Attends weekly and monthly community meetings and events to collect and disseminates information on social or community resources for families in need
  • Conducts home visits according to established procedures
  • Assists in enrolling students into school and other social programs as assigned; maintains intake files
  • Works with school site staff to monitor and follow-up on student academic and attendance progress; contacts families directly to follow-up with parents regarding grades, attendance and related issues
  • Serves as a liaison between parents, community resources and District departments to assist student success in school
  • Creates and distributes informational literature to families regarding PUSD "Families in Transition" program; offers transportation assistance to students and parents by providing bus tokens and taxi vouchers as needed
  • Transports students and parents in personal vehicle as assigned
  • Maintains records related to assigned activities and forms to collect data required by grants and District programs as assigned
  • Participates in District-wide monitoring meetings, planning committee conferences and parent education classes as assigned; attends State and other meetings regarding homelessness as assigned; sits in on parent teacher conferences as assigned
  • Communicates with District personnel and outside agencies to exchange information, coordinate activities and resolve issues or concerns; serves as primary contact for outside resources and families
  • Coordinates donations from various businesses and interested community members; collects and coordinates distribution of clothing and donations as assigned; assists with donation washing, drying and sorting as needed
  • Coordinates summer enrichment activities for homeless students as assigned
  • Operates office equipment including a computer; drives a vehicle to conduct work
  • Performs other related duties as required

  • Operate a variety of office equipment, a computer and assigned software
  • Maintain sensitivity to cultural, religious, ethnic and sexual differences

APPOINTMENT

Employees who receive a regular appointment to the class must serve a probationary period of one hundred and thirty (130) days of paid service. During this period, an employee must demonstrate an overall satisfactory level of performance; failure to do so shall result in the employee's termination without right of appeal to the Human Resources office.

Appointed candidate shall start at Step 1. Upon completion of 130 days probation and satisfactory evaluation, employee shall be advanced to Step 2. All other step advancement is granted each year after probationary period up to the maximum listed salary. Monthly rates listed on PUSD’s Salary Schedules and/or job bulletins reflect full-time appointment, calculated at eight (8) hours per day. Pay is prorated based on actual hours worked.
