Blueberry Cove is a beautiful coastal setting providing swimming beaches, tide flats, forests, meadows, gardens, and a harbor and islands to explore. Blueberry Cove runs programming year-round and looks to be a resource to our local schools and community. In the summer, programs emphasize community living and sustainable agriculture, with campers working in and snacking from the organic veggie garden. In the school year, programming is tied to St. George MSU, as well as the next closest district. The after-school program works with students K-5 and aims to instill a love of nature in students, build community, and support students' emotional growth. Students have the opportunity to play and grow, and a high value is placed on student choice. The Junior Maine Guide program similarly looks to grow middle school students' skills in the outdoors while growing a solid environmental ethic. Public Health AmeriCorps program places members with community organizations in Maine to address CDC determined public health needs for the most underserved populations. Maine communities are home to pockets of refugees and immigrants, in cities and towns like Lewiston, Portland, and Cherryfield, ME. New American youth face significant barriers to success—often influenced by trauma and chaos in their past, learning a new language, and adapting to a new culture—and frequently enter the education system significantly behind their peers. Public Health Youth Development members strive to narrow this gap by increasing social and emotional skills and academic engagement among students, grades 4-12, who have been impacted by Adverse Childhood Experiences (ACEs), including immigrant and refugee youth (grades 4–12). Members support a portfolio of youth through mentoring, school skills support, social and emotional wellness, and community engagement, while building organizational capacity.
Member Duties : Members will act as a professional liaisons between the 4-H Center and schools, area families, students, and community networks to establish, cultivate, and leverage meaningful relationships and collaborations. This position requires service members to work flexible hours especially during the summer camp season. Alongside the members, campers will find the simple yet profound joys of their grandparents’ youth: hiking to see a full moon rise from the ocean, running through a meadow lit with fireflies, feeling the wind on their faces as they learn to sail, and more. Service members will work directly with students to support academic and social-emotional success and provide after-school and weekend experiences around adventure and leadership, cultural exchange, community engagement, and student sparks.
