Drops
FREMONT, SEATTLE, WA :: Kristie has been encouraging me to shoot more still life and abstract photography. As with the Smoke Tendrils, this is a very simple subject that the camera tranforms into a surprisingly interesting series. The images are composed of water drops on a mirror reflecting colored posterboard. The secret is to treat the mirror surface with Rain-X to encourage nice, round drops. The idea originated from another photo on chromasia.

Very interesting John, I like it, it sure adds another dimension to your site. I would like to do more of that type of photography myself. Something you can do on a rainy day. 🙂
I agree – a great photo project for a rainy day!
I always admire those who can take an ordinary object and somehow make it extraordinary with film. I don’t have an eye for it yet, so I hope to experiment with more projects like this.

John,What kind of studio setup do you have at home that is allowing you to do this type of work? I would like to try my hand at it but don’t know what I need to get started besides a camera 😉

It might please you to know that I don’t have any fancy studio equipment. The photos on this page were taken with a tripod, a large window to let in some overcast light, and a few chairs to position the colored posterboard and mirror. I used the 50mm lens, an infrared shutter remote, and a water bottle to place the drops on the glass.
Sure, a pair of lamps and diffusers would have allowed me more control and perhaps produced better images, but I’m happy with how these turned out.

Some cool stuff. I might have to try to dabble in this area a bit, though I would probably just be labeled a poser.
Too late. Poser.
