Summary

This position is responsible for administrating special education services including intake processes and testing, acting as a liaison with district special education representatives and providing specialized instruction on one or more subjects to clients that are designated as special education in order to help them learn the subject matter or skills.

Primary Duties and Responsibilities

  • Assists in organizing and implementing a special education program to manage a caseload of students including course objectives, curriculum and activities to meet the requirements of the state and school district while also attending to the individualized needs, interests, and abilities of clients.
  • Manages special education components and client file requirements for any client(s) that receive special education services per state/federal law, state department of education requirements and contract expectations. Oversees client intake and special education planning to include Individual Education Plan (IEP) documents. Coordinates with school districts, parents, and external parties through meetings and document to transfer, create, update, discuss, and implement the client IEP.
  • Assesses the educational status of clients on a regular basis through assigned lessons, homework and testing. Identifies any client educational issues such as learning disabilities, records results and provides progress reports as required to inform stakeholders including the facility’s treatment team, parents or guardians, school district, and other parties of each client’s educational progress.
  • Employs a wide variety of instructional methods, behavioral tools, and materials that are most appropriate for meeting standard operating procedures and educational objectives that are outlined in the school curriculum. Creates a classroom environment that is conducive to learning and appropriate to the clients’ maturity.
  • Creates and maintains accurate client and administrative documents such as daily attendance and grade books. Summarizes achievements in reports for assigned clients including attendance and behavior.
  • Participates as an educational team member in coordination with the clients, staff, and school and represents the program in professional meetings, family meetings, educational conferences, and teacher training workshops.
  • Coordinates classroom activities, which may include group meetings, field trips, and assemblies.


Minimum Requirements

  • Bachelor's Degree with certification in Special Education.
  • Ability to meet the Commonwealth of Virginia, Department of Education's
    requirement.
  • Possession of a state teaching certification or file proper documentation within sixty (60) days to acquire provisional teaching certification.
  • Possession of a valid driver's license.
  • Ability to pass a background investigation, drug screen and medical
    evaluation.
  • Ability to work independently.
  • Ability to read, comprehend, and interpret documents related to recreational activities/physical education, short correspondence, and memos.
  • Ability to exercise discretion and use independent judgment in making decisions.
  • Cultural awareness and sensitivity.
  • Ability to promote positive behavior and manage resistant behavior.
  • Effective written and verbal communication skills.
  • Effective time management skills.
  • Computer skills including use of the software and hardware available at facility/program.
  • Basic mathematical skills / comprehension of concepts such as addition, subtraction, multiplication and division.
  • Physical ability to safely and effectively manage aggressive behavior.
