PBF Energy Inc. (NYSE:PBF) is one of the largest independent refiners in North America, operating, through its subsidiaries, oil refineries and related facilities. We have an opportunity at our Martinez Refinery in California and are seeking a talented Control Systems Engineer (UT) to join our team as a pivotal member that would play a key role here at PBF Energy.
Control System Engineers (CSEs) support the control systems within the various operating areas of the refinery. Each area has controls that automate plant processes and provide an interface to operators for control, indication and alarming. CSE technical challenges include support of equipment spread over a large geographical area, a mixture of equipment ranging from the oldest to the very newest technologies, real-time closed loop control, supervisory control, advanced control, real-time optimization and safety instrumented functions.

Success in this role is maintaining excellent process safety performance, reducing control and instrument reliability incidents, improving standardization of equipment and configuration while planning for and reducing obsolescence, and responding to, anticipating and meeting Operation’s needs. The refinery environment is fast-paced and highly collaborative where prioritization skills to balance urgent short-term work with crucial long-term objectives are valued.
Job Responsibilities May Include:
  • Design and implement control strategies and graphics improvements for the assigned Operating Area.
  • Assess and assure health and reliability of the Honeywell Distributed Control System and maintain documentation.
  • Troubleshoot control and instrumentation problems to understand probable cause of failure and develop solutions to reduce recurrence
  • Communicate findings and status on control and instrumentation issues to stakeholders in Operations, Technical and Maintenance groups
  • Execute formal Management of Change work process for control system modifications
  • Support capital project work from inception through implementation and operation
  • Train and mentor inspectors and technicians
Position Specific Requirements:
  • Candidate must have active TWIC card or be able to obtain a TWIC card. Information can be found at

  • Participate in the refinery on-call Control Systems Engineering Team duty rotation schedule for off-hours support.
  • During periodic maintenance events such as plant turnarounds, an altered work schedule over an extended period may be required.
  • Occasional after-hours support may be required to address major refinery upsets.
Minimum Qualifications:
  • B.S. Engineering degree in Electrical, Control Systems, Chemical, General Engineering or other relevant engineering branch (or additional equivalent experience in lieu of degree)
  • 4 years’ experience with distributed control systems in a process industry
  • High school diploma or G.E.D.
Preferred Qualifications:
  • General refining process knowledge
  • Experience with the nuances between automation vs control theory
  • Experience in methodologies for complex system troubleshooting
  • Work experience with the following technologies:
    • Honeywell DCS configuration on Experion and TDC3000 series equipment
    • Honeywell HMIWeb graphics development
    • General instrumentation and process analyzer (QMI) experience
    • Experience with control loop tuning, building and maintaining advanced process control systems (such as DMC3, SMOC or PACE), and real time optimization systems built in ROMeo
    • Automation languages such as Honeywell AM and PM CL, Visual BASIC and JavaScript

The salary range for this position is $84,617.04 - $142,857.98. The compensation range listed in this posting is in compliance with applicable state law. Factors such as scope and responsibilities of the position, candidate’s work experience, education/training, job-related skills and internal peer equity will be considered in determining the selected candidate’s compensation. Salaries at the time of hire are typically in the lower to middle portion of the above range in order to provide the opportunity to reflect future performance-based increases.
