GENERAL FUNCTION: To provide YMCA of El Paso members with safe and effective swim instruction in accordance with the guidelines established by the YMCA Swim Lessons Program. PRIMARY DUTIES 1. All instructors must wear swimsuits. 2. Arrive at least 5 minutes before class time and be on deck prior to the start of class. 3. Meet your class in the assigned area and have all equipment ready. 4. Learn children’s names and take attendance each class. Keep student records up to date. 5. Be prepared to teach and know the subject of your instruction. A lesson plan is required. 6. You are responsible for hands-on instruction, getting in the water with your students. 7. Never leave your class unattended. 8. Teach in a safe and courteous manner. 9. Complete skill sheets daily. 10. Complete progress reports prior to the last day of class.

SECONDARY DUTIES 1. Pick up area and put all equipment away. 2. Answer parent’s questions. If unable to answer, refer to Aquatic/Program Director. 3. Reports all concerns, incidents and accidents to supervisor immediately. 4. Perform additional task as instructed by supervisor.

JOB QUALIFICATIONS: Knowledge, Skills and Ability 1. Prefer current lifeguard certification, CPR for the Professional Rescuer or equivalent from a recognized organization, First Aid and AED. 2. Prefer have Fundamentals of Teaching YMCA Swim Lessons certification. 3. Must obtain YMCA Swim Lessons Certification in the levels that you would like to teach. 4. Must be at least 16 years of age. 5. Must be able to work as a team member. 6. Must be willing to work a flexible schedule. 7. Must be able to read, understand and follow written instructions in English. 8. Must be able to lift and carry up to 50 lbs. without strain. 9. Must be able to work in hot, humid environment. 10. Must be able to work in chemically treated pool water areas.

ADDITIONAL REQUIREMENTS: 1. Must be able to handle irate, complaining and demanding individuals in a calm, professional manner without internalizing or personalizing comments made. 2. Must be mentally able to recognize potential hazards and be capable of handling emergency situations to include performing CPR if necessary. 3. Abide by guidelines set forth in the YMCA Personnel Policy Manual.
