Performs a variety of skilled, technical and administrative work in the operation, repair, maintenance and repair of complex equipment and treatment processes under contract with the City of St. James.

Basic Duties:

  • Ensure plant(s) function to their optimum capabilities in compliance with all regulations.
  • Monitor, observe variations, and interpret the performance of all equipment, gauges, meters, control panels and charts to determine appropriate processing requirements.
  • Perform required laboratory tests, including assembling instruments and equipment for analytical or research work.
  • Maintains accurate records, report and logging of all pertinent information required in the operation and maintenance at the facilities.
  • Performs various contract obligations such as sewer jetting, hydrant flushing, locating of mains, valve turning, documenting and maintaining records using various software applications.
  • Using the company's maintenance program software document all repairs, maintenance and replacement of equipment.
  • Prepares and submits monthly operations and performance reports to region office and client.
  • Orders, stores, and accounts for chemicals, utilities, contract services, and other materials and supplies in the most cost-effective manner, including coding of all invoices accurately and timely submission to the Region Office.
  • Ensure building and grounds are tour-ready in appearance and company vehicles are maintained and cleaned.
  • Represent the company to other agencies and citizens with a courteous, helpful, accurate and business-like attitude.
  • Attendance and punctuality are essential to this position.
  • Other duties as assigned.

Lead Operator Additional Duties:

  • Serves as team leader in the day-to-day operations of the water/wastewater facilities.
  • Plan, schedule, and assign tasks/duties.
  • Train/coach personnel in the operations and maintenance at the location.
  • Conduct informal problem-solving and dispute resolution sessions.
  • Provide input into the hiring, evaluation process, goals, and firing of personnel.

SIGN-ON BONUS payout:

  • $10,000 - Class B wastewater certification with DS II
  • $8,000 - Class B wastewater certification only OR Class C wastewater with DS II
  • $5,000 - Class C wastewater certification only

Payout will be as follows: Half paid after completing 6 months of service, remaining half paid at one year. If you obtain your B within the year, you will receive an additional $1,000 at the one-year payout.


  • High school diploma or equivalent.
  • Lead Operator must possess a Class B wastewater certification and DS II. Other positions will not be required to possess certification but must be actively pursuing certifications.
  • Strong mechanical knowledge with experience working with various hand and power tools, such as wrenches, shovels, screwdrivers, saws, etc.
  • Valid driver's license with clean record to operate company vehicle and be insurable under our Commercial Vehicle policy.
  • Must reside within a 10-30 minute response time.
  • Ability to work on-call for a 7-day period, including performing weekend rounds. Must be able to respond to after-hour emergency callouts.
  • Excellent customer service skills to present a positive and professional image.
  • Computer knowledge a must with experience using various Microsoft Office products.
  • Ability to take initiative in getting the work done accurately and timely with little to no supervision.

Compensation dependent upon certifications and experience.
