Job Summary
Under the supervision of the Education Director and in collaboration with the Principal for the Tlingit Culture, Language, and Literacy (TCLL), increase the use of effective biliteracy and bilingual instructional strategies being implemented by the TCLL Teachers and the TCLL Tlingit Language Teachers. Through relationship-based, reflective practice, guide, coach and mentor the TCLL team of educators to increase the use of the Tlingit language in the classroom, by both the students and instructors, and to implement their culturally responsive curriculum.

Duties/Responsibilities
  • Provide embedded professional learning, coaching, and modeling to support TCLL students’ language acquisition and development in the Tlingit language.
  • Conduct TCLL classroom observations and engage TCLL Teachers in reflective practice based on those observations.
  • Participate in weekly TCLL team meetings and monthly program leadership meetings
  • Complete required reports, agendas, and data collection as required to meet the needs to the grant supporting the TCLL program.
  • Participate in SHI Education Department meetings and other SHI meetings for all staff, including professional development opportunities as assigned

Work Environment
Some of this position’s duties are performed at the SHI Campus, but most will be within the Juneau School District, Harborview Elementary, TCLL classrooms and offices. This role routinely uses standard office equipment such as computers, phones, photocopiers, filing cabinets, and fax machines.

Physical Demands
While performing the duties of this job, the employee is regularly required to verbally communicate. This position is very active and requires standing, walking, bending, kneeling, stooping, crouching, and climbing all day. The employee must frequently lift and/or move objects up to 20 pounds and occasionally lift and/or move objects up to 50 pounds.

Additional Requirements
  • Some travel may be required for professional development opportunities.
Required Education and Experience

  • At least one year of providing support and instruction in classrooms serving elementary and/or middle school students.
  • Degree in Education or closely related field.
Preferred Education and Experience

  • Experience supporting language acquisition in elementary or middle school settings
  • One or more years providing bilingual support and instruction in a classrooms serving elementary and/or middle school students.
  • Experience providing bilingual support and instruction for Alaska Native elementary and/or middle school students.
