If so, Guardian is seeking a Senior Underwriter to effectively manage a book of business in support of stated mission and key financial and performance measures. You will be responsible for underwriting functions for New Business, Renewal, and Add-Issue for groups over 500 lives for Group Life, Dental, Vision, STD, LTD, Accident, Hospital Indemnity and Critical Illness insurance. You will provide consultative services to sales producers, brokers, and/or customers regarding group insurance plans.
You Will
- Provide pricing and plan design for cases with 500-999 lives utilizing prior claim experience and manual rates.
- Recommend competitively priced products, funding arrangements, and services to meet customer requirements
- Determine pricing of new business and/or renewal business, including alternate plan of benefit options
- Communicate rate/fee development and plan design offered
- Negotiate with sales representatives or agents/brokers to resolve rate questions and discrepancies, or risk related concerns
- Perform accurate financial analysis to determine the risk classification according to company guidelines.
- Complete contract comparisons for takeover business
- Handle administrative processing of cases (obtains missing information, completes risk letters). Document case decisions and underwriting rationale.
- Utilize underwriting systems and databases for quotes, sales, and renewals to track results
- Meet specified metrics for completion of new business quotes, amendments, and renewals.
- Respond to RFP Questionnaires.
- Consult with risk committee, Management, Consultants and Actuaries.
- Provide consultative services to sales producers, brokers, and/or customers regarding group insurance plans.
- Effectively work as part of a regional Underwriting Team. Proactively supporting sales by effectively managing cases, identifying trends and opportunities in support of key financial and performance measures.
- Monitor and report financial results of assigned accounts in region. Produce experience reports/exhibits as needed and respond to broker and customer inquiries.
- Provide mentoring/coaching to help develop technical skills of others, support team growth and development initiatives.
- Participate in project work or on teams to develop or improve underwriting processes.
- Conduct training for sales and/or underwriting staff as needed.
- Ensure accurate and consistent application of Underwriting Policies and Procedures.
- Apply knowledge of Federal and State legislation related to Group Insurance Products.
- Act as a product resource to support sales efforts and superior customer service.
- Respond to inquiries from Customer Service Delivery (New Business & Benefit Services, Customer Eligibility & Payment Services and CRU).
- Identify core competencies, key specialties, technical, human relations or managerial.
You Have
- College Degree BS/BA or equivalent work experience.
- 5 years of experience with Group Life, Disability, and Dental underwriting.
- Background in experience-based rating and risk assessment.
- Industry related course work is recommended but not required.
- Command of underwriting tools and systems.
- Thorough knowledge of Group Insurance products/processes.
- Knowledge of local market competition and strategy (e.g., impact on claim pricing and product choices).
- Excellent analytical and mathematical skills and ability to apply them to complex cases and issues.
- Ability to make decisions, solve problems and meet challenges in completing work.
- Strong negotiation and conflict resolution skills.
- Proven ability to work independently.
- Excellent verbal and written communication and presentation skills.
- Effective use of Word, Excel, and PowerPoint applications.
- Understanding of the Guardian’s various computer systems.
Travel
- Travel to the Sales, Broker, and Plan holder offices as needed.
- Travel to industry conferences as needed.
Location /Travel
Hybrid role - 2 days in the office, 3 days WFH - Preferred locations- Guardian home offices located in Bethlehem, PA, New York NY, Stamford CT, Holmdel, NJ - or in a Guardian sales offices located in Atlanta, Chicago, Boston, Newport Beach, or Piano/Dallas. We will consider candidates outside of preferred locations, offering flexible work arrangements if aligned.

Salary Range
$64,830.00 - $144,480.00
The salary range reflected above is a good faith estimate of base pay for the primary location of the position. The salary for this position ultimately will be determined based on the education, experience, knowledge, and abilities of the successful candidate. In addition to salary, this role may also be eligible for annual, sales, or other incentive compensation.
