Our Enterprise Risk Management department is seeking a Principal Underwriting Risk Analyst to join their team.

This is a full time, exempt role

Position Overview/Objective:
Support CRO in delivering and enhancing the firm’s Enterprise Risk Management practices. Partners with business leaders to provide continuous risk assessment, monitoring and communication with emphasis on specialized risk discipline (Underwriting; Catastrophe). Conceptualizes, designs, and implements risk assessment frameworks across multiple domains, articulates and quantifies risk scenarios, and evaluates risk mitigation actions. Provides thought leadership in catastrophe risk modelling including aggregation management, climate change scenario testing, growth and underwriting strategy and related disclosures. Influences frameworks used to assess our own view of catastrophe risk and evaluates the appropriateness of external models to support the same. Drives risk culture through the organization providing appropriate risk communication including escalation to senior management and the Board of Directors. Pursues continuing education in enterprise risk management or related fields.

Responsibilities/Essential Functions:
  • Owns and is accountable for risk assessment; monitoring and reporting for specialized risk discipline (Underwriting; Catastrophe)
  • Designs and proposes risk benchmarks; risk appetites; risk tolerance statements; stress and scenario tests and socializes with appropriate business leaders
  • Demonstrates thought leadership and partnership around climate change; understanding, measuring, and evaluating strategy relative to climate change
  • Influences framework to assess internal view of catastrophe risk and evaluates the appropriateness of external models to support the same
  • Develops and executes catastrophe risk management tools including deterministic and stochastic models to assess risk aggregations to inform pricing, planning, scenario analysis and strategy
  • Liaises with business partners on specifying operational and emerging risk scenarios and executes quantification of risk scenarios
  • Proactively identifies and communicates current and emerging risks
  • Understands corporate strategic direction and general knowledge of corporate/business unit interdependencies
  • Influences and negotiates the appropriate actions to mitigate / prevent failures associated with identified risks
  • Promotes risk culture and provides training, mentorship, input and guidance to business partners and senior leadership on risk analysis results and recommends course of action
  • Builds tools and produces technical analysis to influence risk strategy across the organization
  • May participate on various risk committees or working groups (Enterprise Risk Management Group, Aggregation Working Group)
  • Drives communication and decision-making process with respect to risk escalation to senior leadership and the Board of Directors
  • Demonstrates intellectual curiosity and active learning, continuous monitoring of industry news and publications, attendance at industry conferences or meetings and pursuit of appropriate risk management certifications
  • Ensures assigned risk processes follow industry best practices and satisfies customer needs
  • May lead or participate in recruiting and/or training activities
Skills and Experience:
  • Bachelor’s Degree or higher in a relevant technical field
  • 10+ years of experience with at least six in the Insurance Industry, preferably having broad exposure to company operations and at least three years of financial modelling or catastrophe risk management relevant experience.
  • Actuarial credentials or experience desirable
  • Demonstrated leadership skills & capabilities
  • Exemplary financial acumen and Insurance industry knowledge
  • Developing executive presence with excellent influencing and decision-making ability
  • Adept at interpreting data; establishing quantitative approaches to solve business problems and articulating conclusions in a non-technical fashion
  • Advanced scripting, programming, and financial modelling skills (ex. SQL, R, MetaRisk, etc.)
  • A systems-based mindset for project implementation. Conceptualizing a project as the development of a system to be scaled up and out rather than a one-off project to provide a single answer.
  • Able to advise and train team members and influence without authority
  • Able to apply and interpret company policies and procedures
