Ranch Hand

Scatter Joy Acres is a non-profit, educational organization, and providing animal assisted therapy, for children and young adults, seniors, veterans, and families. Set on a beautiful 15-acre campus in Murray Nebraska, SJA programs are rich in adventure, community, history, and spirit and foster an individual relationship with nature and animals. Position Summary: This position is responsible for supporting the management of all aspects of a small, diverse ranch. The Ranch Hand plays an essential role in the creation of a farm which blends production with meaningful lessons in sustainability and resource management. The position will work in coordination with the SJA Director, the Volunteer Coordinator, Equipment Manager, to ensure the ranch is managed in a safe and productive manner to accomplish this mission. The primary responsibilities of the Ranch Hand will be to help care for all livestock, maintain safe and healthy buildings, land, and equipment, and help manage the livestock program. This position will work to create a well-maintained ranch, an optimal number of animals for summer and school year programs, and to assist program staff in developing and implementing educational farm curriculum.

Responsibilities:

Livestock Management:

• Implement Ranch Management Plans, in conjunction with the Ranch Team.
• Manage all aspects of animal care, herd development and herd management in accordance with

USDA standards certification.

• Care for pasture and paddocks, including the use of equipment.

Year-Round Farm and Grounds Maintenance:

• Assist with routine maintenance, opening and closing of ranch, firewood, brush hogging, roads, ditches, and snow plowing as needed.
• Work to enhance the aesthetics and orderly functioning of SJA grounds, work areas, barns, gardens, and equipment.

Program and Education:

• Support ranch program activities to meet safety standards and expectations set by ACA, OSHA, insurance, and the State of Nebraska.
• Be able to act as an educator if needed.
• Support Ranch & Wilderness programs including the summer camps, and special activities such as

Work Weekends, Volunteers and Family Camp.

• Train and support Ranch Interns during their internships. Maintain an active role in mentoring and providing opportunities for skill and leadership development.

Qualifications: Required:

• Commitment to youth development and progressive social change
• At least three years’ experience in one or more of the following areas: Dairy Farming, Herd

Management, Farm Education.

• Demonstrated ability to prioritize work tasks
• Basic computer skills (Outlook, Word and Excel)
• Self-starter
• Strong Attention to detail
• Ability to work as a team leader.
• Strong interpersonal communication skills.
• Ability to manage teams of youth to achieve farm goals and objectives.

Experience Desired:

• Bachelor’s Degree or the equivalent work experience.
• College level courses in Animal Science, Dairy Science, Land Management or other professional development that relates to farming skills and farm management.
• Experience in running educational or therapeutic farm programs

Job Type: Full-time

Pay: $15.00 - $20.00 per hour
