About us
Based in McAllen, Texas, the South Texas Juvenile Diabetes Association (STJDA) is a nonprofit dedicated to enhancing the lives of children living with diabetes through personal empowerment, family support, community awareness, and public advocacy.
STJDA was founded in 2011 by a group of parents with the aim of providing support to other families like theirs, whose children were living with Type 1 diabetes. Over the years, STJDA has continually adapted to the changing needs of the children and families they serve, including the growing number of children in the Rio Grande Valley who are living with Type 2 diabetes.
The Program Assistant is responsible to assist in the coordination, implementation, and evaluation of all STJDA programming year-round. This position plays a key role in assisting with the developing and implementing summer camp programming with a focus on youth leadership. The Program Assistant works to develop strong relationships with children, youth, and families often serving as a bridge between doctors, healthcare professionals, and families. The Program Assistant reports directly to the Program Manager.
RESPONSIBILITIES
Programming
● Assist in the oversight for all STJDA programming including but not limited to Unlicensed Diabetes Care Assistant (UDCA) training, Shot Spot Bears, medical assistance, scholarships, Stomp Out Diabetes Campaign, the 24-7 helpline, the food pantry, community garden, youth leadership, and advocacy.
● Assist in planning and execute annual summer camp programming.
● Assist in developing and overseeing program timelines and monitor progress toward achieving goals.
● All other duties assigned by Program Manager
Education and Advocacy
● Assist in collaborating with other service providers to help plan and coordinate educational activities. Serve as liaison with local, state, and regional agencies and organizations.
● Represent STJDA in community coalitions and committees.
Funding & Growth
● Assist with the development of grant proposals and funding requests.
● Assist with fundraising
QUALIFICATIONS & CORE COMPETENCIES
● Bachelor’s degree in social work or education or equivalent work experience in the field.
● Bilingual English/Spanish preferred.
● Valid Texas Driver’s License with a satisfactory driving record and appropriate insurance.
● Ability to work with confidential material without betraying the trust of children, their families, and the agency – HIPAA compliance (referenced in the employee handbook).
● Ability to exercise the utmost discretion, diplomacy, and tact in verbal and written communications.
● Knowledge of program planning concepts and practices.
● Exceptional organizational skills and ability to meet deadlines.
● A strong work ethic, ability to maintain and model high personal, ethical and professional standards, as well as an outgoing and positive personality.
● Food Handlers, First Aid, and CPR certifications desired but not mandatory.
● Ability to interact with a wide variety of community members from different cultural, social, and economic backgrounds.
● Knowledge and ability to operate computers and Microsoft Office (database, word processing and spreadsheet software).
● Job requires up to 36 hours a week with a flex schedule to accomodate some programming in the evenings and weekends.
● Job will include heavy lifting (>20 lbs.)
