Position Summary:
The Qualified Medication Aide (QMA) is responsible for administering medication and performing treatments to assigned residents in accordance with established nursing care procedures. The QMA is also responsible for providing assigned residents with daily person-centered care and services in accordance with established care procedures and as may be directed by the Clinical Charge Nurse and/or Clinical Nurse Manager.
Organizational Relationship and Scope:
1. Directly reports to the Clinical Charge Nurse and Clinical Nurse Manager with final reporting to the Director of Nursing.
2. Works and communicates consistently with all core team members and other department members as needed.
3. Accountable for the proper interpretation and fulfillment of the position, its essential and non-essential responsibilities and related authority and relationships.
Essential Job Duties:
As a member of the Nursing Services Team and consistent with the community policies, programs and budgets, this position has responsibility for performing the following:
Resident Personal Services
1. Administers ordered medications and treatments within their scope of practice as described in and according to the Indiana State Department of Health regulations.
2. Documentation of above administrations.
3. Document PRN medications and treatments properly including the complaint and effect of the medication/treatment.
4. Must keep the medication cart and medication room locked and secured when not in attendance.
5. Practice good housekeeping, keep cart, med room and work areas neat and tidy.
6. Know how to use the PDR or drug reference book to obtain information regarding medications. Always confer with a licensed nurse if in dowbt.
7. Re-order medications as needed per pharmacy procedure. Check in from pharmacy and store per PRC policy.
8. Assist Resident Services Coordinators (RSC) as needed with resident personal care duties as needed including: Personal hygiene, Elimination, Ambulation, Nutrition, Hydration, etc.
9. Carry call system device and respond within specified time frames to resident calls as needed.
10. Check resident rooms for safety concerns, call lights within reach, unauthorized medications, foods
11. Documentation of all of the above in electronic medical records.
12. Perform other duties as assigned by Clinical Charge Nurse or Clinical Nurse Manager.
Dining Service
1. Perform assigned responsibilities as a provider of nutrition. These responsibilities include but are not limited to:
a. Total service for assigned residents at every meal
b. Providing residents with assist (feeding and cueing) at assigned tables
c. Bussing of assigned tables
d. Documentation of required intakes.
Recreation Services
1. Perform assigned responsibilities as a provider of recreation. These responsibilities include but are not limited to:
a. Assisting residents in self-initiated recreation (daily)
b. Assisting with pre-dining recreation (daily)
c. Documentation of all of the above in electronic medical records.
Environmental Services
1. Assist the resident in maintaining a safe and clutter-free environment.
2. Remove hazardous items, immediately responding to spills per the carpet care policy and procedure.
3. Keep all areas clean by picking up debris from the floors and other surfaces and disposing of them into the trash.
Communication
1. Observe and report resident care problems such as skin break down, poor meal or fluid intakes, change in functional status, refusal of care, negative or inappropriate behaviors, etc.
2. Report all concerns or complaints made by residents and/or family members to the Clinical Charge Nurse or Nursing Manager
3. Maintain open communication with all Team members
4. Maintain open communication with Clinical Nurse Manager and Director of Nursing regarding work schedule, policies and procedures, supplies/equipment needs and job responsibilities.
5. Attend and participate in department meetings and in-service training programs as scheduled.
6. Maintain confidentiality of all residents and abide by Resident Bill of Rights.
Customer Service
1. Create and maintain an atmosphere of warmth and personal interest in each resident, as well as a calm environment throughout the work place.
2. Must adopt the Hospitality Promises and conduct themselves according to those promises to create an atmosphere of extraordinary impressions.
3. Must possess the ability and willingness to work as a team member with other teams/departments.
4. Must possess the ability and willingness to adopt a mentality that employees of Peabody Retirement Community are “here to serve” residents, families and other team members.
5. Assist any and all residents, family members and public persons as they request. Answer questions and direct them as needed with assistance of a team member, walk with family/visitor to their destination.
QUALIFICATIONS:
Education & Experience:
1. Must possess, as a minimum, a current Indiana approved Nursing Assistant certification and Indiana approved QMA certification.
2. Must be able to read, write, speak and understand the English language.
3. Experience as certified nursing aide preferred.
4. Must attend regular pharmacological in-services to continue education.

2. Must possess the ability to deal tactfully and hospitably with employees, residents, family members, visitors, government agencies/personnel, and the general public.

4. Must be willing to seek out new methods and principles and be willing to incorporate them into existing practices.
5. Must possess the willingness to work as a team with all other department employees.
6. Must be able to relate information concerning residents’ condition.
KNOWLEDGE, SKILLS & ABILITIES:
- Experience in working with senior adults desirable.
- Friendly, helpful attitude.
- Regular, predictable, and dependable attendance.
- Must be able to read, speak, and write in English language.
PHYSICAL REQUIREMENTS/WORKING CONDITIONS:
· Works throughout the campus, i.e. resident rooms, spa areas, activity areas, etc.
- Sits, stands, bends, lifts and moves intermittently.
- Is subject to frequent interruptions.
- Can be subject to hostile and emotionally upset residents, family members, etc.
- Must be able to push, pull and move residents, equipment, supplies, etc. minimum of 50 pounds.
- May be exposed to infectious waste, disease conditions, etc. including the AIDS and Hepatitis B Viruses.
- Is subject to falls, odors, etc. throughout the workday.
- Works beyond normal working hours and on weekends, holidays, and in other positions as necessary to meet all resident needs.
- Exposure to blood borne pathogens: Level II.
- Primarily inside in climate-controlled settings, occasional activities outside in hot or wet conditions.
- May be exposed to unsettled weather conditions (cold, heat, rain, etc.).
- Equipment used may include but is not limited to: stand lift, hoyer lift, walker, wheelchair, pager, shower, washer & dryer, resident furniture, electric skillets, toaster ovens, microwaves, televisions, and other equipment as assigned.
