This position may be performed remotely anywhere within the United States except for the State of Colorado, Alaska, North Dakota, or South Dakota.
Salary Range for all U.S. Residents (excluding Alaska, California, North Dakota, South Dakota): $136,900.00 to $185,000.00
Salary Range for California Residents Only: $173,900.00 to $235,000.00

This role is to direct the engineering of our core payment platform. The engineering team is large, fairly distributed and is based on multiple geographies and time zones. There are ambitious growth plans that the Senior Director’s passion and ability will help to fulfil. This senior director role will manage multiple managers, directors and principal engineers, and will have a pivotal role in building our core payment network.
Responsibilities:
- Provide technical direction and leadership on a technical platform supporting one or more product lines
- Direct the work of one or more agile engineering teams
- Lead and manage a large team of engineers
- Ensure that organizational priorities are implemented in engineering
- Work closely with product managers to ensure the availability, scalability, resilience, and observability of platforms are prioritized
- Provide thought leadership while relying upon extensive experience and judgment to plan and accomplish engineering objectives
- Develop a long-term strategy for platforms and translate that into an achievable roadmap and action plan with product leaders
- Define, design, and implement best-of-breed software
- Continuously enhance the functional and technical capability of existing software products
- Work with product owners, business stakeholders, business analysts and engineering teams to review business requirements and minimize ambiguity
- Identify opportunities for engaging business review throughout solution development and provide technical leadership and advice as needed
- Management and execution against product and project plans, ensuring delivery commitments are met
- Coordinate the tasks and deliverables of a delivery team members including architecture, engineering, QA, infrastructure, support, and technical operations
- Ensure design, code coverage and code reviews are completed as appropriate
- Initiate informal reviews of ideas and technical objectives within and across business units
- Evangelize and lead the adoption and implementation of Blackhawk’s engineering practices
- Work closely with the engineers and team leads to architect and develop the best technical design and approach
- Hire, promote, mentor, and continuously raise the bar for a best-in-class engineering team
- Report on status of development, quality, operations, and system performance to management
- Handle multiple competing priorities in a fast-paced environment
- Lead the investigation and resolution of key technical issues
- Work proactively with other engineering leaders and peers to develop and enhance organizational processes and best practices
- Senior Engineering leadership of a team of at least 120 people
- 15+ years of software development experience with relevant technologies
- Experience building distributed systems using java technologies.
- Strong knowledge of computing concepts such as service-oriented architecture, REST services, fault tolerance, self-healing, network protocols, network programming, multi-threaded programming, performance, reliability, scalability, and security.
- Amazon Web Services (AWS) including ECS, RDS, EC2, Lambda, SQS, Route 53, CloudFormation, Elasticache etc.
- Knowledge in Front end Technologies like Angular, React etc
- Strong architecture and design skills
- Hands-on knowledge of relevant technologies, design patterns and implementation practices
- Exceptional leadership, time-management, organization, and problem-solving skills
- Ability to be productive and effective in a matrix organization
- Excellent communicator – strong verbal and written skills required
- Masters/Bachelor's degree in Computer Science or related discipline
