JOB DESCRIPTION

JOB SUMMARY:

As a phlebotomist, you will be the one who draws blood from patients, collects a variety of other specimen samples as well as label the blood vials that you have filled. The duties and responsibilities include, but are not limited to the following:

DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES

  • With general oversight:
  • Follows GLML policies and procedures and responds to administrative directives.
  • GLML ensures a safe environment for all employees, providers and patients by complying with GLML’s safety and equipment and infection control policies and procedures.
  • Attends required meetings and safety training in-services and reports incidents/accidents and complies with preventative action as needed.
  • Adheres to the regulatory standards set forth by OSHA, MIOSHA, CLIA, COLA and HIPAA.
  • Identifies and assists in resolving problems and/or complaints.
  • Maintains strictest confidentiality. Ensure the confidentiality of all patient information throughout all phases of laboratory testing. The privacy of each patient must be maintained by preventing all confidential information from being seen or heard by unauthorized persons, including other patients, visitors to the facility and any unauthorized party outside of the GLML facility.
  • Equipment Operations
  • Receives training and obtains a complete understanding of the equipment utilized to perform successful phlebotomies, fulfilling test pre-requisites prior to patient testing.
  • Monitor specimen storage requirements, protection from extreme temperatures and humidity
  • Inspects and ensure phlebotomy equipment is valid to ensure phlebotomist equipment is functioning within valid expiration date, and works safely and efficiently.
  • Tracks vehicle needs, gas, oil, cleaning, maintenance, etc.
  • Ability to make a decision to post pone testing if a problem is identified with the patient not meeting requirements or not physically/mentally capable of providing a sample.
  • Reports all equipment issues to Lab Manager.
  • Perform Laboratory testing on patients as medically directed or ordered by a medical provider.
  • Performs specimen collection when necessary
  • Read testing orders and patient information for appropriateness and completeness of the order.
  • Ensure that specimens collected by another location (patient, physician, nurse, medical assistant or phlebotomist) are properly labeled with appropriate patient information; are collected in the appropriate containers and contain adequate amount for testing requested.
  • Ability to identify the need for physician attention to or additional testing of patient to ensure the most accurate results are obtained for diagnostic purposes.
  • Phlebotomy equipment & Supplies:
  • Maintains inventory of phlebotomy supplies necessary for the daily performance of testing.
  • Understands reagent stability and follows manufacturer recommended storage conditions.
  • Assists in identifying and communicating potential problems and errors to the Laboratory Manager. Under general supervision, trouble-shoots, and implements corrective actions.
  • Examines work flow and related operational procedures and makes recommendations on possible work simplification and cost reduction improvements. Meets position objectives and deadlines with minimal errors and reworks.
  • Takes responsibility for own actions.
  • Demonstrates positive customer service skills towards patients, physicians and coworkers. This includes, but is not limited to, friendliness, courteousness and patience.
  • Displays a positive attitude about teamwork with coworkers, and providers.
  • Assists in orientation and training of new employees.
  • Provides feedback to Laboratory Manager/Supervisor.
  • With general assistance, meets position objectives and deadlines with minimal errors.
  • Anticipates and identifies problems in a timely manner.
  • Adapts to changes in work environment and workload.
  • Uses systematic approach to tasks, setting priorities, considering alternatives and assessing risks.
  • Includes appropriate people in decision-making and keeps physicians, administration and staff informed of changes.
  • Performs other related duties and projects as assigned.
  • Ability to work in a high-volume/fast paced office
  • Willing to work rotating Saturdays
  • Must have a minimum 2 year's experience in pediatric phlebotomy

KNOWLEDGE, SKILLS, AND ABILITIES REQUIRED:

Phlebotomy skills and training differ from state to state. In general, you should expect to take a phlebotomy course that lasts only several months as well as a clinical period where you will be working as a student phlebotomist. Most phlebotomy classes will set up the clinical for you and tell you where to report in order to begin training as a phlebotomist. You should receive a certification of completion after you have finished both the class and the clinical. phlebotomy classes are normally given as adult non-college courses, which means that you do not have to get a degree or attend college classes to enter this field. Obviously, the educational requirements will differ from one state to another.

When you work as a phlebotomist, you are doing something great for yourself and for the patients you’re working with on a daily basis. It is important to be a real people-person as a phlebotomist because you will be working with a variety of different people regularly. The field of phlebotomy is also a very fast-paced one, but this can differ depending on where you work. Draw stations tend to be very quick-paced while hospital floors are a little slower. By training as a phlebotomist and entering the field, you will find that this helps you to have a career that is very rewarding and challenging all at the same time.

Basic Requirements for collecting blood.

  • collect blood samples from patients
  • practice proper patient identification, especially when working on hospital floors using a minimum of “Two” patient identifiers.
  • label vials with patient names and dates
  • decipher the best method for drawing blood depending on the specific patient
  • transport all specimen samples to a GLML laboratory
  • centrifuge blood samples,
  • expect to work with a large number of patients varying in age and health status
  • be friendly, courteous and empathetic when it comes to working with patients
  • keep your phlebotomy cart or station well-organized at all times
  • practice infection control standards at all times when working with patients and equipment
  • Minimum Education:

High School or GED equivalent: Phlebotomy class certificate preferred and if working more than a year, an (AMT) or equivalent certification desired.

  • Minimum Work Experience:
  • Certification, Licensure, Registration: From an accredited Phlebotomy school or OJT records showing competence
  • Communication and Language Skills:

Requires good written and verbal communication. Must be able to react calmly and effectively in stressful or time-sensitive situations. Requires ability to read and understand detailed information or procedures.

  • Computer Skills:

Work requires competency in using various types of computer software. Requires familiarity with using the Internet and Websites. Ability to effectively see colors for order of draw determination.

  • Management Skills:

With general oversight, has the ability to prioritize multiple demands. Willingness to participate within a team. Ability to interpret physician’s orders, review charts to determine information to be released.

  • Physical Effort:

Work requires prolonged periods of standing, walking, bending, reaching and lifting objects weighing less than 20 pounds. Ability to drive and/or provide own transportation to GLML offices and other off-site meetings. Maintain a valid driver’s license and proof of personal insurance is a plus.

  • Work Environment and Equipment Used:

Work is performed in an office environment that is occasionally noisy, crowded, stressful and under time-sensitive conditions. Work is performed in an office and laboratory environment with exposure to communicable diseases and accident hazards. Standard laboratory equipment, fax machine, computer, printer, calculator, copy machine, and other equipment used in an office and laboratory setting. Personal safety and infection control equipment.
