- Demonstrate understanding of applicable laws and the National Association of School Nurse’s (NASN) Framework for 21st Century Nurse Practice.
- Demonstrate thorough knowledge of school-based and day to day operations for the care of pediatric/adolescent or teenage patients.
- Coordinates district health and wellness initiatives
- Coordinates delivery of daily health services in a cost-effective manner.
- Coordinator must be on call whenever nurses are scheduled to work. Works hourly during summer school as needed.
- Communicates and collaborates with students/families, nurses, and administration regarding student health care issues. Acts as facilitator or active problem-solver in complex situations as warranted.
- Acts as an informational resource to the educational and health care team in matters of interpretation and implementation of district policies/procedures/protocols, risk management, safety, advocacy, management, and other related areas.
- Coordinates critical care planning, training of staff, and communication between school and home.
- Responsible for timely dissemination of relevant information to Health Services Administration and other key personnel.
- Maintains data on communicative diseases and submits proper reports to Kent County Health Department and Kent Intermediate School District.
- Performs regular rounds throughout the district to support the Health Services staff in the delivery of quality services that meet district standards, policies and procedures.
- Ensures each school maintains a standard of tools in all health rooms
- Performs quality assurance audits and data review as required and provides written reports to Health Services Administration.
- Serves as an active member of the District’s Crisis Response and Behavioral Threat and Violence Team
- Assists in selection, training, development, of contracted nurses and health aides
- Reports concerns to leadership and contracted nursing supervisor in accordance with district policies and procedures.
- Assumes a leadership role in reviewing nursing assessments, with student acuity rating and recommendations, to determine appropriate staffing to facilitate safe, quality health services in a cost-effective manner which meets district policies and program standards.
- Provides input into the development, implementation, and evaluation of program goals with district and community partners. Prioritizes goals so that they are consistent with student health care/administration needs.
- Actively participates in safety initiatives and risk mitigating measures where appropriate.
- Assists in the preparation, maintenance, and submission of reports as required.
- Assists with the identification and implementation of community partnerships.
- Conducts training of staff and/or parents on wellness initiatives
- Updates resources and education tools for School Health Services staff.
- May assist in coordinating partnerships nursing colleges
- Obtain within the first 6 months of hire a non-BLS CPR instructor and/or skill evaluator certification in order to certify employees in First Aid/CPR/AED.
- Works to obtain the MIHeart Safe Designation in all schools
- Files appropriate documentation for billing
- Performs other duties as assigned.
- Licensed as a Registered Nurse in the State of Michigan.
- Master’s degree in nursing preferred.
- Certification in school nursing preferred.
- Three years of recent, relevant clinical experience.
- Effective written and verbal communication and interpersonal skills.

- Self-directed. Independently mobile.
- Ability to make quality, independent decisions.

Summary of Position: Under the leadership of the Executive Director of Student Services, the District Nurse Coordinator works to design a comprehensive nursing/wellness program that benefits all students. This position will serve as a liaison with the district healthcare partners to comply with all board policies and local and state regulations.
The District Nurse Coordinator is responsible for ensuring that all students have equitable opportunity and access to health and wellness services. These services will be made available through planning, implementing, coordinating, and evaluating school health services in alignment with the District’s mission and vision for meeting the needs of the “whole” child. District Nurse Coordinator collaborates with KPS staff, local agencies, and contracted service providers to ensure the overall health and wellness of students.
