General description
While under the direction of the quality assurance manager, develop, maintain, and improve the metallurgical process within our quality system.
Functions
- Develop training manuals, control plans, procedures and instructions related to heat treat processes for (but not limited to) hardening, quenching, microstructure, hardness test methods, heat treat process audits, crack detection, etc.
- Ensure Kay Manufacturing Co.’s processes and procedures meet customer specified requirements and CQI-9 requirements.
- Represent Kay Manufacturing Co., regarding metallurgical matters, with suppliers and customers.
- Produce reports with conclusions on research and tests of materials and processes.
- Interpret and understand design drawings and make recommendations.
- As the heat treat subject matter expert at Kay Manufacturing Co, make manufacturing time- critical decisions, which may include shutting down a production cell until we make the appropriate adjustments to the hardener.
- Discuss different solutions to problems with other technical staff. Provide professional opinion to others, that my be quoting or developing a process, as to material grade, properties, and process selection.
- Interpret customers’ manufacturing design requirements and product application.
- Conduct internal CQI-9 assessments and host CQI-9 customer audits.
- Provide daily oversight over the activities within the metallurgical lab.
- Provide training and direction to metallurgical lab technicians.
- When appropriate, utilize metallurgical lab equipment to prepare and study samples, utilizing saws, polishing equipment, etching solutions, hardness testers, microscopes, magnetic particle inspection and eddy current instrumentation.
Qualifications
- Must understand induction hardening process, including the relationship of power and time, to its effects on the quality of product.
- Must possess a bachelor’s degree in metallurgy or material science.
- Must be able to interpret and present data and information utilizing Microsoft Office tools.
- Must possess basic computer skills.
- Background in automotive industry and familiarity with automotive standards is ideal.
- Must possess a minimum of 5 years metallurgical experience.

Pay: $70,000.00 - $90,000.00 per year
