Job description
Under the general direction of the Director of Lectures, Courses and Community Celebrations, the Manager performs a wide variety of responsibilities to support the public programs department, independently researches, develops and implements key programs including Community Celebrations, Open House Celebrations, the City Talks and Looking Together series; stewardship of events and supports the successful execution of a busy programming department.


ESSENTIAL FUNCTIONS:

Programming:

Works closely with Curator and external partners to support the planning, development, implementation and oversight of community celebrations, lectures, concert programs and cross-department initiatives including MFA Late Nites.


Develops programming vision, schedule, and budget for “Looking Together” and “The City Talks” programs. Works with partners across the city as well as internal departments to plan and organize our seven Community Celebrations and four Open House days. Supports day-to-day running of various programs and introduces speakers for weekend/evening programs as needed.

Support new programming initiatives with thorough research, relationship-building and the fostering of ideas within the staff of the MFA. Identify and maintain relationships with relevant individuals, community organizations, and cultural institutions to encourage participation in MFA programming. Provides programming ideas to the “Late Nite” series and assists in its program execution.


Intra-Museum Coordination

Acts as a key support for Director in liaising with other Museum departments that provide services necessary to the production and support of public programs. Assists the Director in any coordination with Visitor Experience to carry out program logistics, including set-up of program space and day-of running of all actual events.

Supports the successful execution of concerts and musical programs not directly connected with the concert program including Community Days and Cultural Celebrations, as well as additional cross-departmental programs including the Performance Art Program.

Program Promotion:

Collaborates with the Director on working with the Communications Division on the promotion of the public program department. Assists in collating and developing material necessary for promotional materials, including information for mfa.org, program brochures and postcards, direct e-mail marketing, other advertising, and announcements.

Works closely with the Coordinator on implementation and oversight of additional promotion that targets special interest groups.

Intra-Museum Coordination:

Serves as liaison with other Museum departments that provide services necessary to the production public programs.

Books rooms for programs and meetings via EMS. Works with Media Services to ensure that all programs have the necessary equipment.

Ensures that all logistics are orchestrated in an organized and timely fashion for a smooth program execution.

For all programs works with the MFA House Manager, Facilities, Protective Services, Restaurant Associates and other departments, in order to oversee the logistics of program production prior to the event or performance itself and day of the event or performance.

Assists as a staffing resource for musical performances not directly connected with the concert program including, but not limited to, those for Open Houses, the MFA Film Program, marketing and other special events.


REQUIREMENTS:

  • Bachelor of Arts in related discipline
  • Three to five years of experience in public programming
  • Ability to interact with a diverse audiences, in terms of age, economic status, and cultural background
  • Ability to work collaboratively with other Museum staff and artists
  • Must be a supportive ally in support of the Museum’s efforts and commitment to IDEA values.
  • Must be a resourceful and detail-oriented planner
  • Must be able to work in a high pace demanding environment without compromising accuracy or high standards
  • Must be energetic and a strong collaborator with an ability to effectively manage internal and external relationships at all levels
  • Outstanding communicator with solid verbal, written and presentation skills
  • Must have solid quantitative skills in order to oversee budget record-keeping
  • Strong organizational and follow-through skills
  • Solid computer literacy
  • Must be flexible and willing to work nights and weekends
  • Experience managing and motivating volunteers and interns a plus
  • An interest in and affinity for working in the arts or non-profit environment.
SALARY AND SCHEDULE:
Full-time salary, 35 hours per week
$62,000 - $70,000, commensurate with experience
