Job Title: Laboratory Technician (Data/LIMS)Division: Animal Health
Headquarters: Moorefield, WV
FLSA Status: Non-Exempt
Nature of Work:
Under direct supervision, perform work at the entry level by conducting a limited number of basic laboratory tasks and examinations and providing routine assistance to technical or professional personnel in accordance with well-defined and established regulations and procedures.
Examples of Work:
- Receive samples; uses the LIMS electronic media to record and uniquely identify, label, and prepare samples for testing; read and record test results; distribute and mail laboratory reports.
- Register and prepare samples for analysis.
- Sterilize and discard infectious and disposable waste materials according to Food and Drug Administration (FDA) and Environmental Protection Agency (EPA) regulations.
- Prepare media and reagents.
- Clean and sterilize laboratory glassware and equipment.
- Maintain adequate supplies used within the work area.
- Maintain records related to duties either in electronic or paper media as required.
- Perform routine laboratory procedures.
- Perform various calculations.
- Develop and maintain quality assurance measures to ensure that analytical methods are under control.
- Perform standard serological related tests and observations in accordance with scientific principles and techniques.
- Communicate verbally and/or in writing with various audiences.
- Attend meetings that may include overnight travel.
- Function independently on assignments while applying established protocols and methods.
- Other duties as assigned.
Normal laboratory and office environments; standing, sitting, walking, driving, lifting up to 50 pounds. Some travel may be required.
Knowledge, Skills and Abilities:
- Ability to comprehend and carry out verbal or written instructions
- Ability to multitask.
- Ability to learn basic laboratory terminology, techniques and practices.
- Ability to learn federal requirements regarding proper disposal of laboratory waste materials.
- Ability to maintain accurate records.
- Ability to prepare boxes and letters for mailing.
- Working knowledge of computers/data entry.
- Skill to perform routine microbiological testing and interpretation of results.
- Ability to follow standard scientific laboratory methods and apply required techniques.
- Ability to speak in front of an audience.
- Ability to work independently.
Education: High school diploma or GED required. Graduation from an accredited two-year college with an Associate Degree that includes at least 1 course in Computer Science and Physical Science preferred.
Experience: One-year employment in a laboratory environment preferred.
Additional Requirements:
- Valid Driver's License.
- Satisfactory completion of pre-employment drug testing.
- Satisfactory completion of pre-employment law enforcement background investigation, including DMV records.
- Must maintain a positive image of the Commissioner, West Virginia Department of Agriculture, and the State of West Virginia.
