Is your dream job being on the water feeling the ocean spray on your face? The Port Aransas Ferry Operation runs a fleet of 8 ferries! Three are 20-car ferries and five are 28-car ferries. The operation crosses the Corpus Christi Ship Channel between Aransas Pass Harbor Island to Port Aransas, on Mustang Island. The quarter-mile route typically takes less than ten minutes. We have flexible shifts that help support the 24-7, 365 days a year operation. The Port Aransas Ferry Operation is a critical part of the evacuation route for the City of Port Aransas during a weather event. We are looking for individuals that have no experience and take initiative with a positive attitude to become part of our TxDOT family in the maritime industry.
This position is for one (1) Ferry Maintenance Technician I, II, or III. The Texas Department of Transportation reserves the sole right in determining the level of position based on business needs and the applicants work experience, education, skill level, and all other appropriate factors.
Salary Plan/Grade:
Ferry Maintenance Technician I A14 $35,642 - $49,134 annually
Ferry Maintenance Technician II A15 $37,743 - $52,045 annually
Ferry Maintenance Technician III A17 $42,332 - $58,399 annually

Assists in routine maintenance and repair of ferryboats, landings, shore facilities, marine equipment/machinery and/or grounds. Work requires frequent contact with private entities. Employees at this level follow standard practices that do not require frequent supervision of details.
Essential Duties:
Ferry Maintenance Technician I:
- Assists in ordering parts, materials and supplies used in repair and maintenance work.
- Assists in performing routine preventive maintenance checks and adjustments on equipment, machinery and systems.
- Assists in the major repair or overhaul of machinery, equipment and/or systems.
- Assists with daily log of watch activities, operating machinery and equipment statistics.
- Cleans shop and maintains grounds.
- Ensures strict compliance with the Federal Waters Pollution Control Act.
- Assists in performing routine ferryboat maintenance and repair work including, but not limited to, refueling, changing oil, lubricating parts and machinery, replacing batteries, changing cables and cleaning and pumping out bilges.
- Participates in periodic all hands drills and emergency exercises.
- Performs duties of ferryboat deckhand as needed.
- Performs other job responsibilities as assigned.
Ferry Maintenance Technician II:
In addition to the above Tech I duties:
- Performs major repair or overhaul of machinery, equipment and/or systems, including but not limited to diesel engines, generators, electric motors, pumps, compressors, starters, clutches and bearings.
- Performs periodic preventative maintenance checks and adjustments of machinery, equipment and/or systems; as required moves items related to these activities.
- Performs routine ferryboat maintenance and repair work including, but not limited to, refueling, changing oil, lubricating parts and machinery, replacing batteries, changing cables and cleaning and pumping out bilges.
- Performs routine welding and carpentry work.
- Assists in inspecting progressing shipyard work and/or vessel machinery, equipment and systems.
- Performs other job responsibilities as assigned.
Ferry Maintenance Technician III:
In addition to the above Tech I and II duties:
- Analyzes reports of malfunctions, assists in conducting operational tests and determines corrective action; makes required adjustments on machinery, equipment, systems and/or components.
- Coordinates required American Bureau of Shipping and U.S. Coast Guard inspections, dock and sea trials and inspects shipyard work and/or vessel machinery, equipment and systems.
- May serve as a lead worker and the related tasks.
- Performs specified and routine periodic preventative maintenance checks and adjustments of machinery, equipment and/or systems.
- Reads and interprets blueprints, sketches, electrical diagrams, piping and mechanical drawings.
- Serves as secondary enforcement authority for state regulations governing operation of the ferries.
- Performs other job responsibilities as assigned.
Minimum Qualifications:
Licenses and Certifications:
For Ferry Maintenance Technician I, II, or III:
- Valid driver’s license. This position requires driving a state vehicle.
- Must have required US Coast Guard (USCG) certifications an/or documents appropriate for the position and vessel being operated.

- Transportation Worker ID Cred-TWIC
Competencies:
Ferry Maintenance Technician I
- Fundamentals of electrical/electronics and design procedures
- Methods and procedures used in the maintenance and repair of marine equipment, machinery, facilities and ferryboats
- Emergency response procedures
- Applicable industry safety standards, guidelines and specification codes
Some skill in:
- Public relations for maintaining effective working relationships with individuals and groups, both internal and external
- Fire fighting
- Using applicable hand and power tools, equipment and mechanical devices of the trade
Ability to:
- Work in varying conditions to include heavy traffic, overhead power lines and underground utilities
Ferry Maintenance Technician II
In addition to the above Tech I competencies:

- Marine operations

Physical Requirements and Working Conditions:
For Ferry Maintenance Technician I, II, or III:
- Subject to inside and outside environmental conditions
- Subject to noise

- Subject to hazards-moving vehicles/mechanical parts, high places/heat, or chemicals
- Subject to atmospheric conditions-fumes, odors, dusts, mists, gases, poor ventilation
- Subject to air and/or skin exposure to oils and other cutting fluids
- Required to wear protective gear-respirator, hard hat, or other device
- Works frequently in small/crawl spaces; manholes; areas that can cause claustrophobia
- Medium work: Lift up to 50 lbs at a time and frequently lift or carry objects up to 25 lbs
- Climbing - ascending/descending ladders, stairs, scaffoldings, ramps, etc
- Balancing-walking, standing, crouching on various surfaces without falling
- Crouching-bending body downward and forward by bending leg(s) and spine
- Crawling-moving about on hands and knees or hands and feet
- Reaching-extending hand(s) and arm(s) in any direction
- Standing-prolonged periods of time
- Pushing-using upper extremities to press against object with force to move in a direction
- Pulling-using upper extremities to exert force moving objects in a sustained motion

- Repetitive Motion-substantial movements of the wrists, hands, and/or fingers
- Close Visual Acuity-work includes data/figures; view a computer screen; extensive reading

- Close Visual Acuity-using measurement devices; and/or assembly or fabrication parts
- Visual Acuity-operate machines, such as drill presses, power saws, and mills
