Edible Schoolyard Garden Educator

Located in the cultural district of downtown Greensboro, the Greensboro Children’s Museum welcomes children, caregivers, and teachers of all backgrounds and abilities to explore and learn in 20+ hands-on indoor and outdoor exhibits including The Edible Schoolyard, a half-acre teaching garden. The garden and kitchen classroom were established in 2010 as a founding program of the Edible Schoolyard Project, a nonprofit started by food activist and restaurateur Alice Waters. The Greensboro Children’s Museum uses a seed-to-table philosophy whereby kids and families learn about the systems through which food is grown, harvested, prepared, and shared as a meal. By giving kids a greater knowledge of and connection to what they eat, we inspire them to make better choices for their health and the health of their communities.

This position is ideal for someone committed to nurturing our children and community through food education, has the skills and experience to maintain a public garden, and a collaborative spirit. There will be opportunities for developing as a leader, educator, and grower through this position.

Reports to: The Edible Schoolyard and Education Director

Position Schedule: Exempt

Schedule: Seasonal, times may vary

September – May Biweekly rotating schedule. Monday – Friday/Tuesday – Saturday. 8:30am – 5:30pm.

June – August Monday – Friday 8:00am – 4:00pm

Roles and Responsibilities

Garden Work

  • Maintain the health and productivity of all plants in the garden including, but not limited to: weeding, pruning, harvesting, planting, seed-saving, implementing soil health strategies, implementing pest control methods, and composting
  • Maintain the tidiness and safety of work and play spaces in the garden
  • Care for a small flock of laying hens
  • Follow best practices for organic gardening with special emphasis on permaculture principles and integrated pest management
  • Plant and provide seasonal produce, including a winter harvest, for the kitchen
  • Maintain garden tools for children and staff
  • Develop and maintain mini exhibits of the garden as spaces of learning through play for visitors. Work with our Visitor Services team on prop selection and procurement.
  • Work with ESY Garden Educators to keep up to date records: garden budget, planting schedule, seasonal records, and other appropriate documentation.

Curriculum and Teaching

  • Co-design, conduct, and evaluate garden-based and environmental science lessons and activities for guests of all ages
  • Co-design, conduct, and evaluate field trips that incorporate STEAM education and academic standards in the garden exhibit
  • Co-design and lead weekly day-camps for children ages 4 -14yrs, June - August
  • Co-design and conduct group cooking classes for children and families
  • Act as the lead for off-site school-based, food literacy programs
  • Mentor and train GCM staff, interns, and volunteers to be involved with programming and activities

Other Duties

Aside from the aforementioned roles and responsibilities, all GCM staff members are asked to provide assistance when needed to support the GCM team in furthering its mission of promoting learning through play. This may include but is not limited to: performing indoor tasks to support programming, providing back-up on other GCM programming, and relationship building with guests.

Qualifications

  • Understanding and sincere appreciation for the work of The Edible Schoolyard to reconnect all people to their food, the earth, and each other
  • Experience in education, youth programming, agriculture, gardening, or related field.
  • A positive attitude, flexible nature, and strong work ethic
  • Desire to experience all aspects of the Edible Schoolyard program and Children’s Museum
  • Knowledge of edible and ornamental plants
  • Experience working at a farm or public garden
  • 3 professional references

Physical Requirements and Working Conditions

· Ability to work in a public facility

· Ability to work independently and make decisions

· Ability to stand, stoop, reach and bend; mobility of arms to reach, dexterity of hands to grasp and manipulate large and small objects

· Ability to read small print

· Ability to stand for long periods

· Ability to lift, push and/or pull objects up to 50 lbs

· Ability to work with and in proximity of equipment with moving mechanical parts

· Ability to perform physically demanding labor outdoors and tolerate varying weather conditions year-round

· Must be open to a flexible workweek under the discretion of the Garden Educator according to season, weather, programming, and other variables

Compensation and Benefits

· $40,000 annual salary
