Distribution Engineering Associate

P&D seeks a distribution engineering associate to join our Distribution & Planning Team and serve our cooperative, municipal, and investor-owned electric utility clients. The ideal candidate is self-motivated, team-oriented, and able to cultivate and maintain strong relationships with clients and colleagues.

Our team works with electric utilities to plan system improvements, evaluate alternatives, and model their system using sophisticated tools and resources. We function as extensions of the utilities engineering staff, helping solve real-world problems and walking with them as they implement long term solutions.

Responsibilities
The associate will work alongside senior and associate distribution engineers and consultants to perform electrical distribution system studies and other planning services such as (but not limited to):

  • Electric Distribution System Planning o Long range planning and analysis o Major system upgrade identification o Short term budgetary planning o Power supply studies
  • Distribution System Analysis o System modeling and analysis o Power factor correction and capacitor placement o Motor start analysis o Load studies o Distributed Energy Resource (solar, wind, other renewable) system impact studies o Arc hazard assessments o System protection and coordination studies o Protective device settings development o Load forecasting
  • Develop the knowledge and skills necessary to proficiently complete studies and projects
  • Perform calculations, analysis, and evaluations for studies projects
  • Define and establish project scopes
  • Use project management methods and practices to successfully complete projects on time and within budget
  • Maintain current and working knowledge of applicable codes and standards (i.e. RUS, NESC, FEMA, IEEE)
  • Continuously improve technical knowledge and skills in all relevant areas
  • Become proficient with the systems and applications used to complete studies and project assignments
  • Develop and maintain strong relationships with clients and project stakeholders
  • Stay informed of client, industry, and company news and developments
  • Learn and remain aware of the services and skills offered by all departments within the company
  • Align company capabilities with the needs of clients and prospect; finding opportunities to offer additional services

  • A BS in Electrical Engineering from an ABET accredited university (required)
  • EIT certification within two years of employment
  • Insured vehicle and be legally eligible to drive
  • Proficiency with Microsoft® Office (required), and Office 365 and SharePoint (preferred)
  • Service-oriented attitude
  • Excellent communication skills
  • Competent technical writing ability
  • Attention to detail, excellent grammar
  • Effective problem-solving skills
  • Strong organizational skills

This position will require occasional travel (up to 25% of the time). May be asked to work extended hours in order to meet project deadlines. Candidates must pass a background check prior to employment.
