Overview


The Director, Community Engagement and Government Relations is responsible for building and maintaining relationships with civic, government and political stakeholders to advance the mission of Columbus Zoo and Aquarium and The Wilds. The role requires the ability to cultivate partnerships and organize initiatives that support the Zoo and The Wilds business, conservation, education and community-engagement goals. This position is the liaison for the Community Engagement Committee of the Board.

Responsibilities

  • Managing and building strong relationships with community partners, government officials and their staff.
  • Collaborates with Zoo and Wilds lobbying firm to advance the mission of the organization.
  • Manages community engagement activities including but not limited to managing relationships with Community Partners (i.e. COTA, Columbus City Schools, Library system, etc.)
  • Attends community events and accept awards on behalf of the Zoo; serves on community-wide committees related to broad initiatives that may impact the Zoo on behalf of the Zoo.
  • Responsible for overseeing the strategic priorities of the organization’s strategic plan as it relates to community engagement.
  • Provides strategic support on developing and implementing the Zoo’s Community Engagement plan, as well as, the levy campaign plan.
  • Participates as needed in external and internal Zoo meetings related to marketing and fundraising events, and other projects related to community engagement.
  • Performs Community Engagement Committee responsibilities such as maintaining updated list of committee members, preparing and emailing meeting agendas, arranging meeting locations and refreshments, taking meeting minutes and attending meetings.
  • Analyzes current processes and procedures and makes recommendations to improve efficiencies and qualify of programs.
  • Schedules and coordinates the reservation and set-up of room and A/V equipment needs for meetings.
  • Prepares general correspondence, meeting agendas, reports, presentations and other materials.
  • Enhances the cohesiveness of a fast-paced, dynamic environment through positive attitude, strong organizational skills and superior customer service.
  • Constantly strives to further the mission of the organization and avidly supports the Columbus Zoo Family of Parks.
  • Implements sustainable practices in daily tasks whenever possible.
  • Performs other duties as assigned.

Qualifications

  • Self-starter and able to work effectively with minimal supervision and professional discretion.
  • High attention to detail, well-developed organizational skills, and strong problem-solving skills.
  • Strategic thinker and planner.
  • 5-7 years of experience in government affairs, community engagement
  • Bachelor’s Degree in Communications, Public Affairs or similar area of study. In lieu of degree, five years of progressive experience leading community and governmental engagement strategy.
  • Understands key elements of public policy, including government processes at the municipal, state and federal levels, and regulatory rule making process.
  • Ability to professionally interact with high level community leaders and government officials.
  • Strong computer skills with ability to be proficient in the use of MS Office software (Word, Excel, Outlook, and PowerPoint)
  • Ability to communicate well both verbally and in writing required.
  • Ability to work a flexible schedule including evenings, weekends and holidays required.
  • Ability to work effectively with a diverse group of volunteers, donors and supporters.
  • Ability to plan and organize work in an efficient and cost-effective manner and without direct supervision required.
  • Ability to provide excellent guest service by positively interacting with guests and upholding the Make it G.R.E.A.T. standards required.
  • Ability to develop and maintain cooperative working relationships with all Zoo team members and contacts regarding company business required.
  • Ability to adhere to standard operating procedures including but not limited to safety protocols required.
  • Possession of a valid state issued motor vehicle operator’s license and a good driving record required.
  • Ability to adhere to the Columbus Zoo and Aquarium’s drug-free workplace policy including but not limited to pre-employment, random, post-accident, reasonable suspicion and follow-up treatment required.
  • Ability to successfully complete a criminal history background check annually required.
