The opportunity:

The Director, Compensation serves as a key member of the global compensation team with a dedicated focus on managing compensation initiatives and programs for Sun Life US. Supporting Group Benefits and Health and Risk Solutions, the Director, Compensation will proactively identify and drive initiatives to improve compensation programs in alignment with our compensation philosophy and in support of business objectives. The Director will work closely with business leaders, Finance, HR and Legal to provide sales compensation expertise in the management of sales incentive compensation for Sun Life US.


How you will contribute:

  • Champions Sun Life’s compensation philosophy and partners across HR and the business to ensure programs are designed and delivered in alignment with compensation, total rewards and HR objectives.
  • Builds strong relationships with HR Business Partners and Business Leaders. Provides consultation and partnership to identify needs and priorities related to sales compensation and broad based initiatives. This includes conducting market research, internal analysis, establishing design principles, building design alternatives, outlining implications through modeling, determining employee and cost impacts, and creating communication and transition plans.
  • Plays a lead role in sales compensation for Sun Life US.
  • Assesses sales incentive eligibility based on job function and role in sales achievement.
  • Consults on sales plan design and leads plan documentation.
  • Manages ad hoc sales compensation interventions including retention, guarantees, and special bonuses.
  • Utilizes data from survey participation and industry market intelligence to inform recommendations.
  • Partners with Talent Acquisition on offer development.
  • Responsible for sales compensation processes and governance including sales plan inventory, approval and oversight, sales guarantee processes and governance, and sales plan cost and effectiveness for Board reporting.
  • Consults with HR Business Partners and Business Leaders on compensation issues and solutions ranging from individual employee recommendations to unique compensation program interventions (e.g., retention programs, one-time payments, off-cycle increases, etc.).
  • Influences the direction and designs innovative solutions for compensation programs by understanding Sun Life’s business, anticipating and diagnosing client needs, and utilizing best practice knowledge.
  • Provides compensation support during the annual cycle for assigned client groups.
  • Stays abreast of and ensures compliance with legal and market related topics including Equal Pay, FLSA, minimum wage and living wage.
  • Supports organization design and job design work. Facilitates Leader conversations to identify and scope work, clarify and articulate accountabilities and develop solutions.
  • Responsible for attracting, retaining and developing talent. Passionate about developing people through coaching, continuous feedback, career development and performance management.


What you will bring with you
:

  • Bachelor’s degree and 8 to 10 years of relevant experience required. CCP designation preferred.
  • Strong knowledge of compensation practices and theory including experience in sales compensation program design. Industry experience desired and people management experience a plus.
  • Excellent interpersonal and consulting skills. Proven ability to build effective partnerships within HR partners and Business leaders in order to effectively collaborate and recommend compensation solutions to solve business problems.
  • Strong communication skills including the ability to effectively communicate complex concepts in simple terms to various audiences.
  • Advanced Excel skills and spreadsheet analysis. Strong Power Point skills with the ability to build and deliver audience-specific presentations.
  • Exceptional analytical, problem solving and financial modeling skills, with an eye for detail and accuracy.
  • Strong project management and planning skills including the ability to lead, plan, organize and resource complex assignments.
  • Experience with mergers and acquisitions a plus.
  • Ability to organize and accomplish objectives independently and through others.

If you are a California resident, the salary range for this position is:

  • Southern region: $146,300 – 219,500 annually
  • Central region: $154,300 – 231,400 annually
  • Northern region: $164,900 – 247,400 annually


If you are a Colorado resident, the salary range for this position is $139,700 - 209,500 annually.


If you are a New York resident, the salary range for this position is $164,900 - 247,400 annually.


If you are Washington resident, the salary range for this position is $154,300 – 231,400 annually.
