Cytotechnologist
Full Time; FTE 1.0
Monday-Friday; 8:00am-4:30pm
Rock Island, IL

The Cytotechnologist (CT) is responsible for working within the established guidelines of the Cytology Department as assigned. The Cytotechnologist is responsible for carrying out the philosophy and objectives established by the Board of Directors and the Management Team. Foremost among these responsibilities are strictly adhering to detail in the technical performance of laboratory procedures, solving practical and analytical problems, resolving conflict, and implementing constructive change, Cytotechnology is the microscopic study of cells for evidence of disease, in particular for the diagnosis of cancer. The field is perhaps best known for the “Pap Smear”, an evaluation of cells from the uterus of the female which can reveal a diagnosis of some kinds of cancer or pre-cancer, as well as inflammatory conditions.
Responsibilities:
  • Determines acceptability of specimens within guidelines
  • Stores specimens under appropriate conditions as quickly as possible
  • Ensures reagents used to process and stain specimens are dated, of sufficient quantity and within expiration limits
  • Performs processing/ordering computer functions correctly
  • Coordinates schedules of Cytology Assistant and Cytology Preparatory Technician to ensure specimen processing is covered
Qualifications:

Not required to perform the essential functions of the position.


Education:


o CT (ASCP) certified or eligible
o Bachelor’s Degree in Field
o Must include one year of formal training in a school approved by the American Medical Association followed by certification from the American Society of Clinical Pathology.


CT (ASCP) certified or eligible


Experience:


3-5 years cytology experience,

Experience in assisting with fine needle biopsy is desirable


License(s)/Certification(s):


Valid driver’s license when driving any vehicle for work-related reasons.


Knowledge/Skills/Abilities:


Able to speak, read, and comprehend fluent English.
Communication- written and verbal


Other:


Use of usual and customary equipment used to perform essential functions of the cytologist position.
