Provide professional assistance working with the medical/clinical needs of those individuals who are seeking or enrolled in the SA outpatient treatment program. Medical Assistant - Mental Health/Substance Abuse will participate on a collaborative team of MH/SA/Medical professionals.
DISTINGUISHING FEATURES OF THE CLASSIFICATION:
- Responsible for providing medical assistance to individuals served within the outpatient psychiatric, mental health and substance abuse treatment program.
- Requires interviewing clients and/or significant others to acquire medical history and health assessment, providing appropriate care either through intervention or referral.
- Assists psychiatrist in psychiatric evaluations and medication management appointments.
- Manages medical records for clients who receive medication only services.
- Required to provide client assessments to determine the most appropriate action for intervention, which may range from referral to the program physician to providing treatment, within the limits of her/his certifications, via standing order.
- Dispenses prescribed medication as directed by program physician and provides educational information to clients and families.
- Assists clients in applying for and navigating patient assistance programs.
- Manages medication samples and schedules pharmaceutical representative’s presentations.
REQUIRED EDUCATIONAL/EXPERIMENTAL QUALIFICATIONS:
- Graduate from an accredited school, with at least an Associates Degree in Applied Science, and/or Medical Assistant Certification, with two years of progressive experience working with the substance abuse and/or mental health clients and their human services needs;
OR
- An equivalent combination education and experience.
