Behavior Specialist

Full-time 40 hours/week

The Behavior Specialist, under the direction of and collaboration with the BCBA, supports the overall educational environment by utilizing, modeling, and monitoring effective behavioral strategies and student programming. The behavior specialist works collaboratively with the BCBA and multidisciplinary teams to address the behavioral needs of individual students and offers program support. The behavior specialist responds during behavioral episodes to provide appropriate crisis intervention in accordance with student behavior plans and policy. Additionally, the behavior specialist assists the BCBA with the development of data collection systems and graphing of student data. The behavior specialist helps promote acquisition in the skill areas of self-regulation, de-escalation, adaptive behaviors, social skills, independence and overall improved school behavior.

ESSENTIAL DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES:

  • Demonstrate an understanding, patient, and receptive attitude toward students of diverse age groups and abilities, including those with challenging behaviors.
  • Model appropriate behavioral interventions, including supporting students and staff during behavioral events in accordance with individualized behavior support plans.
  • Able to respond to behavioral events in a calm, safe, and supportive manner, utilizing and modeling appropriate crisis management techniques.
  • Communicate effectively in oral and written form, with a variety of team members.
  • Learn to create, modify and utilize a variety of appropriate instructional materials and procedures in the enhancement of a training and educational environment.
  • Establish and maintain cooperative working relationships with students and coworkers .
  • Work with the IEP team in the development and implementation of data collection systems, and graph data as needed.
  • Assist with program development for students based on observations and data trends.
  • Maintain appropriate documentation, records, and reports.
  • Must be able to meet and interact with employees and parents/guardians in routine situations, which require tact, discretion, and courtesy.
  • Other duties as assigned.

REQUIREMENTS:

  • Experience working with students with challenging behaviors and varying disabilities.
  • Strong working knowledge and experience utilizing the principles of applied behavior analysis.
  • No background in visual impairments necessarily required.

PREFERRED QUALIFICATIONS

  • Bachelor's Degree or higher from an accredited college or university.
  • Some experience with adaptive technology.

Pay: $17.34 - $34.86 per hour
