Job Summary
Directs the center management, student care, and staff development for all staff levels within Residential Life. Implements the Residential Experience across campus. Supervises three (3) Assistant Directors for Residential Life staff that provide daily guidance to 15 residence centers.
Department Specific Responsibilities
- Leads the work of three (3) Assistant Directors for Residential Life. Oversees all work regarding the student experience in the residence halls related to center management (community engagement, center operations, Human Resources, student care and crisis management, and collaborations with other departments). Responsible for an area that encompasses 37 full-time center staff, 25 graduate students, 250 live-in student employees, and 300 temporary staff. Oversees all center budgets.
Determines all Residential Life needs for summer conferences by working closely with Conference services. In tandem with the three (3) Assistant Directors coordinate staff placement and training for Summer Conferences. With the Assistant Director for Selection and Training, market, recruit, select and train summer student staff. Develops comprehensive assessment program of summer conference program.
Supports the development and implementation of all training for Residential Life staff. Working closely with the three (3) Assistant Directors, develop and coordinate a comprehensive year-long training curriculum and calendar for Resident Assistants, Graduate Assistants, Center Professional Staff, OSA support staff, and Desk Workers. Work closely with the other Residential Life Associate and Assistant Directors to coordinate training efforts with Residential Life student employees and staff to correspond with the residential education initiatives.
Works closely with other RPS departments, Auxiliary Services, Division of Student Affairs, FYE, IUPD, Parking Services, and other offices and departments across campus to develop a coordinated, efficient and learning oriented programs to support student engagement and safety on campus. Coordinate duty coverage and staff transition plans for opening, closing, and all break periods.
General Responsibilities
- Provides highest level of operational leadership and coordination of assigned staff members to define residence life methodologies and standards; provides direction and guidance on high priority residence life projects/initiatives.
- Establishes short-term business plans and long-term operational objectives, including managing project timelines/deliverables and developing resource plans for multi-project/multi-phase residence life initiatives.
- Conducts a variety of personnel actions to include, but not limited to hiring, promotion, performance management, and dismissal.
- Manages high level assignments and allocation of residence life resources, including negotiating and coordinating initiatives that involve staff in other departments/areas/teams; may coordinate large-scale residence life projects with a wide audience in support of academic initiatives, and campus strategic plan.
- Makes budgetary recommendations/proposals based on resource needs and ensures cost containment.
- Researches and stays up to date on new industry residence life standards, technologies, policies, and procedures; responsible for the implementation of new protocols/procedures to address business needs.
- Works collaboratively with other residence life leaders across departments in recommending standards, best practices, and related policies/procedures.
- Prepares management reports and summaries for senior administration, executive, steering and advisory committees; acts as advisor to executive committees; serves on various university committees, communities of practice, and task forces related to residence life.
Qualifications
EDUCATION
Required
- Bachelor's degree in related field
Preferred
- Master's degree in higher education student affairs or Counseling, Training & Curriculum Development, Management, Human Resources, Organizational Psychology or another related field.
WORK EXPERIENCE
Required
- 4 years in residence life, higher education student affairs, or related field
- 1 year of management experience in relevant field
Preferred
- 8 years postmaster experience, showing progressive increases in responsibility, in Residential Life, Student Affairs, Training & Curriculum Development, Human Resources or related field.

- Minimum of 5 years advanced supervisory experience

Working Conditions / Demands
This position requires the ability to work on multiple cases during a single day, prioritize many activities, communicate with a wide range of constituents write effectively and professionally; mental concentration is intense and required. Potential for work hours outside of 8am to 5pm and on weekends, ability to travel out of town, on occasion. The ability to navigate to other offices on campus.
This role requires the ability to effectively communicate and to operate a computer and other standard office productivity equipment. The position involves sedentary work as well as periods of time moving around an office environment and the campus. The person in this role must be able to perform the essential functions with or without an accommodation.
