MDOT MAA is currently accepting applications for the position of Airport Assistant Fire Marshal within the Airport Fire & Rescue Department (FRD) at the Baltimore/Washington International Thurgood Marshall Airport (BWI Marshall Airport).

The Airport Assistant Fire Marshal provides a safe environment for the public and employees at BWI Marshall Airport and throughout the community through research, education, inspections and code enforcement activities necessary to minimize the danger to life from fire and other hazardous conditions.

Responsibilities include but are not limited to the following:

  • Assisting with and ensuring compliance of BWI Marshall Airport construction design standards and other statutory regulations pertaining to Local and State adopted fire and life safety codes including Federal Aviation Regulations pertaining to aircraft fuel storage and handling;
  • Investigating, documenting, and resolving complaints or concerns given a reported situation about fire and life safety issues from employees and the public;
  • Conducting field inspections of existing facilities for fire and life safety violations;
  • Issuing permits in accordance with the agencies policies and procedures;
  • Conducting a review of plans and shop drawings for fire protection and fire alarm systems and shop drawings for renovations and new construction and preparing correspondence using appropriate documents; and
  • Performing inspections of fuel farms, fuel trucks, and fueling operations for Federal Aviation Regulation compliance and the agencies' policies and procedures.
Work is performed at an airport fire station and at response locations throughout the airport, which are exposed to high noise levels from aircraft. The employee is required to work outdoors in all types of weather. In some emergency situations, the Airport Assistant Fire Marshal wears protective clothing and may be exposed to hazardous situations.

This position is an emergency essential position. All employees designated as emergency essential are required to be available to work during weather, operational, and/or disaster emergency conditions. Furthermore, this position requires work in a 24- hour facility and you must be available to work any shift as required by the operational needs of the MDOT MAA.

This position is located at BWI Marshall Airport in Anne Arundel County, MD

Qualifications

MINIMUM QUALIFICATIONS:

Education: Graduation from a standard high school or possession of a high school equivalency certificate.

Experience: Three years’ experience as a career firefighter, at the BWI FRD or comparable airport, or municipality, or military fire department.

Note: A Bachelor of Science Degree related to Fire Science from an accredited college or university may be substituted for all three years of the required experience.

Licenses & Certifications

1. An employee in this classification will be assigned duties that require the operation of a motor vehicle. The employee will be required to possess a motor vehicle operator’s license valid in the State of Maryland.

2. The employee shall have the following certifications at the time of application:
NFPA 1033 Fire Investigator
NFPA 1031 Fire Inspector Level II
NFPA 472 Haz-Mat Incident (operations and awareness)
NFPA 1041 Emergency Service Instructor Level I
NFPA 1031 Plans Examiner I/II

Notes:

1. Acceptable certification shall be from the National Board on Fire Service Professional Qualifications or International Fire Service Accreditation Congress/Department of Defense (DoD) Program.
2. A valid Fire Protection Specialist certificate is preferred.
3. A valid Maryland Emergency Medical Technician – Basic (EMT-B) certification issued by the Maryland Institute for Emergency Medical Services Systems (MIEMSS) is preferred.
4. The employee will be required to possess NFPA 1585 Public Fire Life Safety Educator certification within one year after appointment to this classification.
