SUMMARY:
The Yard Jockey, reporting to the Operations Manager or Supervisor, will assist operations by backing diesel-powered tractor-trailers into dock doors and parking slips, unloading product of varying sizes and weights, maintaining daily yard audits, and a variety of other freight related duties.

This position works Monday through Friday, from 3pm to 11:30pm. The starting salary for this position is 55K per year, plus overtime.



PRINCIPAL DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES:

  • Responsible for the movement of trailers to facilitate warehouse sorting and the processing of merchandise for shipment or storage.
  • Hook and unhook trailers which includes pulling the 5th wheel coupler pin, cranking the landing gear up or down, and connecting the air-lines and light cord.
  • Operate yard truck in a safe manner during numerous roll-on/roll-off procedures daily involving loaded and empty trailers.
  • Inspect truck for defects and safe operating condition before, during, and after trips and submit a written report on the condition of the truck at the end of each trip or tour of duty.
  • Check shipping papers to determine the nature of load and to check for the presence of hazardous materials.
  • Apply knowledge of commercial driving skills in maneuvering vehicle at varying speeds in difficult situations, such as heavy traffic, inclement weather, or in tight loading dock areas.
  • Ensure that all shipping documentation (e.g., manifest, security seal sheet, bills of lading, shipping order or freight bill, etc.) required to move with shipments is available for inspection and that appropriate paperwork accompanies shipment when delivered.
  • Maintain records required for compliance with state and federal regulations, including drivers’ logs, trip sheets, fuel receipts, vehicle condition reports, and any other records required by law and Barrett Distribution Centers.
  • Perform all duties in accordance with Barrett Distribution Centers policies and procedures, and comply with all federal, state, and local regulations for the safe operation of a commercial vehicle.
  • Report all accidents involving company equipment to dispatch supervisors immediately.
  • Other duties as assigned.

EDUCATION:
High school Diploma/GED, preferred. Valid Driver’s license required; Commercial Driver’s License preferred.



EXPERIENCE:
Minimum of 2 years verifiable tractor-trailer driving experience.
Experience must demonstrate a working knowledge of vehicle safety and control systems. Knowledge of DOT regulations governing safe driving, hours of service, inspection, and maintenance.
Must meet or exceed the medical standards of the U.S. Department of Transportation and must satisfactorily pass a drug test prior to employment and continue to pass random drug and alcohol tests under DOT regulations.
Ability to read, write, and communicate effectively in English (Bilingual Spanish/English skills preferred).
Ability to perform simple mathematical calculations with mental ability to handle receipts, manifests, trip sheets, read maps, road signs, and complete drivers’ daily log and recap hours of service.
