Description of Work Unit
CEMML is a research, education and service unit within the Warner College of Natural Resources at Colorado State University (CSU). CEMML applies the latest and most appropriate science to promote the sustainable management of natural and cultural resources on Department of Defense (DoD) and other public lands. We provide technical support, conduct applied research, and offer career development and learning opportunities to support resource stewardship. Position Summary
Colorado State University (CSU) and the Center for Environmental Management of Military Lands (CEMML) is hiring a Wildlife Biologist to join a team of natural resource professionals supporting installation needs at Beale Air Force Base (AFB), California. This is a field and office based position that will assist with the implementation of a variety of projects identified in the Integrated Natural Resources Management Plan (INRMP) for the installation. This position will focus on avian identification, data collection, and habitat analysis. Work location is at Beale AFB, Yuba County, California.

Beale AFB is an approximately 23,000-acre installation located in Yuba County, California. The base is located east of Marysville and Yuba City, about 40 miles north of Sacramento in the rolling hills of northern California.

Required Job Qualifications
  • Bachelor’s degree in wildlife biology or closely related area and at least 3 years of post-degree experience in field biology (terrestrial and/or aquatic wildlife issues including species biology, species habitat requirements, and ecology, especially for endangered species) OR a related Master’s degree with 1 year post graduate relevant experience.
  • Strong California (or closely related area) avian background with experience conducting avian surveys for burrowing owl, black rail, tricolored blackbird, and/or Swainson’s hawk as well as experience conducting all species point counts for songbirds.
  • Knowledge of federal, state and local laws, regulations and requirements regarding environmental protections (e.g., Sikes Act, Clean Water Act, Endangered Species Act, Migratory Bird Treaty Act, NEPA, etc.).
  • Strong technical writing skills
  • Experienced and proficient with ArcGIS; collecting spatial data in the field and converting to a standardize GIS format as well as creating maps and figures.
  • One or more years field experience in California (or other similar areas such as Oregon, Washington).
  • Able to work in harsh environments (temperatures > 100 degrees in the summer and near-freezing temperatures in the winter), walk long distances on uneven ground.
  • Must have a valid driver’s license or the ability to obtain a driver’s license by the employment start date.
  • The successful candidate must be legally authorized to work in the U.S. by proposed start date; CEMML will not provide visa sponsorship for this position.


Applicants should address a minimum of two skills from the following:
  • Hold or be able to obtain a Master Bander permit (for avian species using nest boxes)
  • Experienced banding nestlings.
  • Hold or be able to obtain a special status species survey permit for western yellow-billed cuckoo, vernal pool fairy shrimp, and/or vernal pool tadpole shrimp.
  • Experience identifying California avian species by call.
  • Knowledge of and experience with military Integrated Natural Resource Management Plans (INRMP).
  • Familiar with vernal pools and fairy shrimp.

Preferred Job Qualifications
  • Master’s Degree in wildlife biology or closely related area and at least 1 year of experience in field biology (terrestrial and/or aquatic wildlife issues including species biology, species habitat requirements, and ecology, especially for endangered species)
  • Writing survey memos and technical reports.
  • Providing avian management recommendations.
  • Plan, conduct, present, and track annual surveys.
  • Background in at least one area for the following: herpetology, invertebrate, entomology, mammalogy, and/or bat survey work.
  • Experience writing Clean Water Act 404/401 permits.
  • Experience verifying and delineating wetlands using USACE data sheets.
  • Experience preparing ESA section 7 consultations for U.S. Fish and Wildlife Service and National Marine Fisheries Service.
  • Identifying Best Management Practices (BMP) to avoid impacts to natural resource and to comply with environmental regulations.
  • Experience working on military lands or on other public lands with multiple uses
