Wildlife Biologist Crew Leader

Environmental Technician III

Salary Range: $25.00 - $30.39 per hour depending on experience

Full-time, seasonal position: April 17-October 13, 2023

(Actual season dates may vary depending on weather and workload.)

Summary Description

This is a physically demanding position conducting biological surveys and other associated tasks. This is a full-time seasonal position (40 hours/week for the seasonal period) and may require working on holidays, evenings and weekends. This position also requires working early morning and late evening hours with some long days in the field. Applicants must demonstrate their ability to work as a professional, mature team member in stressful and physically demanding situations.

Daily job duties may include, but are not limited to:

  • Conducting protocol surveys for biological resources including active nests and dens, raptor nests, bat roosts, areas of breeding bird behavior, snags, dense cover areas, and sensitive habitats/plants
  • Conducting avian point counts in urban and non-urban locations
  • Conducting avian nest searches in urban and non-urban locations
  • Conducting protocol surveys for California spotted owl, northern goshawk, willow flycatcher and bat species
  • Data entry, both in the field on a tablet and in a database or spreadsheets on a computer
  • Summarizing data from field surveys and writing summary reports
  • Communicating and coordinating with staff from other land management agencies in the Tahoe Basin
  • Ensuring that all requested surveys are completed on time including scheduling work of other field biologists and managing a master Google Sheets document
  • Diligently following relevant Tahoe RCD policies and carrying out administrative duties related travel and time recording
  • Performing additional services and other related duties as directed by the Environmental Services Program Manager

Required Qualifications:

  • Experience supervising a field crew and providing QA/QC for collected data
  • Ability and commitment to keeping precise and accurate records of data
  • Experience independently conducting bird point counts
  • Ability to identify western birds by sight and sound
  • Demonstrated ability to pay close attention to detail and enter data carefully and accurately
  • Experience using ArcGIS to plan, implement, and document wildlife surveys and species detections
  • Ability to conduct surveys in rough terrain, navigate using map, compass, and GPS unit, and work in various weather conditions
  • Ability to work independently and in a team environment
  • Possess a valid driver's license, with clean driving record
  • Possess excellent communication skills
  • Ability to work early mornings and late evenings with some long days in the field
  • Ability to work on holidays, evenings and weekends
  • Demonstrated ability to stay organized, follow directions and carry out specific tasks

Desired Qualifications:

  • 3+ years college education and/or experience in wildlife sciences or natural resources
  • 3+ years conducting bird surveys

Benefits:

In compliance with the state’s “Healthy Workplaces, Healthy Families Act of 2014” (California AB1522), all employees are entitled to use up to three (3) days of paid sick leave in a 12-month period. Sick leave hours are accrued at a rate of 3.08 hours for every 80 hours worked. Benefits include State of California sick pay, Worker’s Compensation Insurance, California State Unemployment Insurance, California State Disability Insurance, and Social Security. If you are currently enrolled in The California Public Employees' Retirement System (CalPERS), membership will be continued.

Please note:

Housing is not included with this employment opportunity. Length of field season may be modified due to inclement weather and/or workload demands. All positions are contingent upon funding. Though use of a District vehicle is preferred, incumbent will be required to use personal vehicle for work duties when District vehicle is not available. District will reimburse mileage at the federal rate when a personal vehicle is used. Travel time is reimbursed at hourly wage.
