The Position

The Portland Water Bureau is seeking a Water Meter Technician I to join the Customer Service Team.
About the Division:
The Portland Water Bureau (PWB) has over 192,000 customers and the Customer Service (CS) group is responsible for those customers' meters to cash. The Meter Shop performs a wide variety of meter-related duties involving installations, repair and replacements, test and cleaning, backflow test and repair, and other job tasks associated with water meters. Meter Shop is split into small and large meter operations performing work for residential, commercial, and wholesale customers as well as working with several internal stakeholders to ensure we are delivering upon mission goals and objectives.

About the Position:
This is a skilled position involving inspecting, installing, repairing, cleaning and testing small water meters. Duties include installing and repairing water meters and including performing percentage calculations as needed; using a variety of hand and power tools; keeping a meter truck supplied with parts for many different types of meters; keeping safety equipment, instruments, tools and equipment in safe operating condition; driving the meter truck to the work site, analyzing sites for hazardous conditions; setting up the site with required traffic control equipment. Water Meter Technicians I may also repair and replace defective meter parts with new parts to meet tolerance specifications and reassemble repaired meters. Work requires the Water Meter Tech I to perform their work with considerable independence.

To Qualify

Applicants must meet each of the following minimum qualifications. Describe in their responses to the supplemental questions and resume how their education, training, and/or experience, meets each of the following minimum qualifications:

1. A bility to learn the techniques necessary to use various tools and materials in troubleshooting, diagnosing, repairing, and maintaining small water meters as well as performing basic plumbing repairs.
2 . Ability to learn new skills related to metering technology, mobile service orders, and entering your hours worked in SAP or other similar systems.
3 . Ability to communicate effectively; work independently without supervision, and ability to follow written and oral instructions.
4. A bility to obtain skill in using hand and power-operated tools.
5. Experience in providing customer service to possibly angry or upset customers.
6. Ability to record, complete, and maintain accurate records.

Applicants must also possess:
  • Must be fully vaccinated for COVID-19 per City/State mandate or have an approved exception by the date of hire.
  • A valid state driver's license and acceptable driving record at the time of hire .
  • Ability to work in all weather conditions.
