Purpose of PositionThe purpose of this position is to assist in the maintenance of the Water & Wastewater Distribution and Collection system and all facilities and grounds for the water treatment plants, pump stations, facilities and reservoirs. Works under the direction of the Field Maintenance Manager, or designee.

EXAMPLE OF DUTIES
Essential Duties and ResponsibilitiesThe following duties are normal for this position. These are not to be construed as exclusive or all-inclusive. Other duties may be required and assigned.• Performs a variety of grounds maintenance functions; mows lawns, trims trees and bushes, removes snow and ice; installs fences and signs.• Performs a variety of facilities and equipment maintenance functions; paints pumps, pipes, hydrants and facilities as assigned. Cleans filter tanks; performs custodial functions.• May perform meter reading functions.• Performs copper sulfate applications at reservoir.• Collects information and data as required.• Changes screens at gatehouse.• Assists in the operation, maintenance and repair of water distribution and treatment systems• Assists in operation, maintenance and repair of the sewer collection and treatment system.• Performs confined space entry; requires re-training annually.• Requires the handling of hazardous chemicals.• Operates equipment assigned to the position.• Assists in the operation of specialized maintenance equipment utilized to maintain the water and sewer systems.• Assists plant operators in plant maintenance and repair functions.• Takes water samples for laboratory analysis.• May be assigned to an emergency crew to assist in repairing broken pipes and lines.• Performs manual work in the laying and clearing of pipes, patching or resurfacing roads, removing leaves and trash, and loading materials.• May lead seasonal workers in a variety of construction, maintenance and repair tasks.• Performs minor maintenance work on vehicles and equipment.• Services trucks and equipment with fuel, lubricants and accessories. Performs manual work in the construction and maintenance of the water and sewer system.• Checks buildings, facilities, and grounds for maintenance and security purposes; may load or move materials as required.• May be required to input data concerning activities of the division.• Maintains availability to respond to emergency situations on a rotating on-call basis, or as determined by the Director of designee.

MINIMUM QUALIFICATIONS
Minimum Training and Experience Required to Perform Essential Job FunctionsHigh school diploma or equivalent with six months of related experience or any combination of education and experience that provides equivalent knowledge, skills and abilities. If required by the DEP at a future date, must have the ability to obtain a State of Connecticut DEP Collection Certification.

Includes the ability to perform subsequent action in relation to these computational operations.• Requires the ability to establish and maintain effective working relationships with other employees and the public.• Requires the ability to provide guidance, assistance and/or interpretation to others, such as co-workers and the public, on how to apply policies, procedures and standards to specific situations.• Requires the ability to utilize a wide variety of reference and descriptive data and information such as work orders, distribution maps, lists, measurements, inventories, meter reports, service cards, procedures and general operating manuals.• Requires the ability to communicate orally and in writing with the Superintendent and all division personnel, other City departments, inspectors, contractors and the public.Mathematical Ability• Requires the ability to perform addition, subtraction, multiplication and division; and to calculate percentages and decimals.Physical Requirements• Requires the ability to operate, calibrate, tune and synchronize, and perform complex rapid adjustment on equipment, machinery, tools or related materials used in performing essential functions.• Ability to coordinate eyes, hands, feet and limbs in performing skilled movements such as operating equipment and vehicles.• Tasks involve the regular and, at times, sustained performance of moderately physically demanding work, typically involving some combination of climbing and balancing, stooping, kneeling, crouching, crawling, and lifting, carrying, pushing, and pulling moderately heavy objects and materials, twenty to fifty pounds.• Requires the ability to recognize and identify similarities or differences between characteristics of colors, shapes and sounds associated with job-related objects, materials and tasks.Environmental Adaptability• Ability to work under conditions that require exposure to environmental factors.
