The City of Middleton seeks application for a Water Utility Crew Member. This role is a critical member of the city's Department of Public Works and Water Utility Staff. Successful applicants will have a work background in streets/general construction operations and a desire to work in a high performing team environment, but still be able to work very independently. Highly competitive candidates will have all of the above and hold certifications and/or experience working with water utility/sewer utility systems and hold a Class A Driver's license.

City of Middleton Utility Crew Members are responsible for maintenance of both the City's water and sewer infrastructure. This critical role ensures that these fundamental systems remain operational and serve the citizens and businesses of the Middleton as intended and expected. Utility crewman must perform a wide range of tasks to meet this requirement. Utility crewman may also perform emergency response maintenance and repair duties in times of system failure during storms and storm water management problems and events.

The Utility Maintenance Worker, under general supervision of the Utility Foreman, is responsible to perform skilled and semi-skilled work in the general construction, maintenance, and operation of the City's water and sewer system. This critical role is a front-line operational employee who executes tasks and assignments both solely and as part of team. The Utility Maintenance Worker's job ensures the safety, effectiveness, and efficiency of the water and sewer systems for the citizens and businesses in the City of Middleton.

This Position is:

  • Pay Basis: Hourly

  • Schedule: Full-time 40/hours week standard work with with occasional night and or weekend hours and overtime.

Job Functions

Essential Functions

  • Install water service lines, meters, valves, tees, and fire hydrants involving making various taps on the main lines, laying new lines, replacing and repairing sections of old pipe, and other related tasks
  • Perform light mechanical work on equipment and small engines.
  • Repair and test water meters.
  • Read water meters on a quarterly basis to determine consumption.
  • Operate water pumping and treatment facilities, including tasks such as taking meter readings, adjusting chemical dosages, adjusting valves and settings, operation of equipment and machinery involved in the well pump and treatment plant operation.
  • Completes daily records and data sheets.
  • Assist in the maintenance and repair work at the sewage lift stations and on sewer lines with Vactor water jetting equipment.

Knowledge, Skills, and Abilities

Knowledge

  • Working knowledge of the methods, materials, tools, and equipment commonly used in water and sewer utility maintenance work.
  • Knowledge of the rules of safe operation of equipment and the precautions to be taken in order to avoid accidents.

  • Ability to maintain excellent work attendance and timeliness
  • Operate equipment of the Utility section including trucks, loader, tapping equipment, etc.
  • Ability to follow oral and written instructions.

  • Ability to work in confined spaces

Education, Training and Experience

Education

  • High School diploma or an equivalent.

Training and Certification

  • Possession of or ability to obtain a first level Waterworks Operator Certificate highly preferred; ability to obtain this certification from the State of Wisconsin within one year required.
  • Possession of a Wisconsin "Class A" Commercial Driver's License with Tanker endorsement highly preferred; ability to obtain and maintain such qualification required - the City will provide this training where necessary.

Experience

  • Two years experience in water and sewer maintenance or construction work is preferred.
