Position Summary Information

Job Description Summary
Commonwealth University of Pennsylvania invites applications for part-time, temporary summer faculty positions as needs arise within the TRIO Upward Bound program during the program’s annual Summer Academy for area high school youth who will be entering grades 10-12.
The TRIO Upward Bound program serves eligible high school students, who are from low income backgrounds and first generation college students, from eight area target high schools to prepare to succeed in college after high school.
Based on the specific needs of the program at the time of appointment, a successful applicant must be qualified to teach introductory and/or upper-level courses to high school students on campus during a six-week long Summer Academy.
Course(s) may include math, science, literature/composition, communications, global languages, social studies, public speaking, SAT/ACT prep, study skills, and/or related high-school level coursework.
The home campus for these temporary positions will be Bloomsburg.

Essential Duties

Specific Duties
Plan and teach courses, monitor students’ academic progress, attend weekly faculty meeting, identify student award recipients, make academic referrals as needed to the program’s Academic Coordinator.

Minimum Qualifications (Required Knowledge, Skills and Abilities)
  • Bachelor’s degree and at least fifteen semester hours of graduate credit
  • High school teaching experience
  • Record of successful teaching experience with students from socioeconomically disadvantaged backgrounds
  • Demonstrated ability to work with diverse populations
  • Strong communication skills

Preferred Qualifications
  • Masters’ degree
  • Secondary teacher certification
  • Previous target school or experience with TRIO

Recommendation for hiring is needed from a majority of the regular, full-time department faculty.

Prior to a final offer of employment, the selected candidate will be required to submit to a background check including, but not limited to, employment verification, educational and other credential verification, Pennsylvania Child Abuse History Clearance and criminal background.

Completing this search is contingent upon student enrollment and available funding.

Background Clearances

In accordance with Act 153 of 2014 (HB 435), appointment is contingent upon completion of a satisfactory background investigation which includes, but is not limited to, Act 34, Pennsylvania Criminal Record Clearance; Act 151, Child Abuse Clearance; and Act 114, Federal Bureau of Investigations (FBI) Criminal Background Checks.

Appointment is provisional provided the “Arrest/Conviction Report and Certification Form” and verification of your three background checks are returned to the Human Resource office prior to your hire date.
