Position Description

Nashville’s Metro Water Services (MWS) is seeking licensed Treatment Plant Shift Supervisor for both potable water and wastewater treatment operations to produce high quality water or wastewater in compliance with federal and state environmental regulations. These positions are considered shift work.

The water treatment plant shift supervisor will work at the Omohundro Water Treatment Plant. The position will perform the supervisory duties and skilled work involved in the operation of the 90 MGD plant with a separate pump station, treatment building, and the system control room which monitors the water distribution and sewer collection system 24 hours a day and 7 days a week.

The wastewater treatment plant shift supervisor will work at the Central Wastewater Treatment Plant. This position will perform the supervisory duties and skilled work involved in the operation of the 330 MGD biological process plant, including 120 MGD of combined sewer flow from the city core.

Typical Duties

Wastewater:


  • Operate the plant to meet all NPDES permit, SWPPP, 503d, and other applicable requirements, including the proper collection and transport of regulatory samples.
  • Manage each shift efficiently, including meeting with personnel during shift changes.
  • Supervise and evaluate the work performance of plant technicians and other employees.
  • Ensure that analytical procedures set by the department and regulatory agencies are followed.
  • Complete required operational documentation (plant operational logs, personnel forms, etc.).
  • Conduct plant inspections and initiate service requests for corrective maintenance.
  • Work closely with maintenance to achieve regulatory compliance.
  • Teach, train, and mentor plant technicians to increase their understanding of plant operations and wastewater treatment processes.
  • Develop, update and enforce Standard Operating Procedures (SOPs)
  • Ensures safety of plant personnel.

Water:
  • Operate the plant to meet all EPA and TDEC rules and regulations, and other applicable requirements, including the proper collection and transport of regulatory samples.
  • Oversee, monitor, and control the water distribution system and oversee and monitor the sewer collection system through SCADA in the System Control Room.
  • Manage each shift efficiently, including meeting with personnel during shift changes.
  • Supervise and evaluate the work performance of plant technicians and other employees.
  • Ensure that analytical procedures set by the department and regulatory agencies are followed.
  • Complete required operational documentation (plant operational logs, personnel forms, etc.).
  • Conduct plant inspections and initiate service requests for corrective maintenance.
  • Work closely with maintenance to achieve regulatory compliance.
  • Teach, train, and mentor plant technicians to increase their understanding of plant operations and water treatment processes.

Minimum Qualifications

High School Diploma and five (5) years’ experience in the daily operation of a water or wastewater treatment plant, including two (2) years’ experience leading and supervising in the operation and maintenance of a water or wastewater treatment plant.

For the purpose of this recruitment “some experience may be considered in lieu of education”

LICENSE REQUIRED:

  • Valid Drivers License
  • Wastewater Only: Tennessee Wastewater Operator's Certification of Competency - Grade IV for treatment plant operations.
  • Water Only: Tennessee Water Operator's Certification of Competency - Grade IV for treatment plant operations.

Preferred Experience, Knowledge, Skills, and Abilities

  • Experience in supervising employees in a 24-hour treatment plant operational setting.
  • Knowledge of the materials, methods, and equipment used in treatment plant operations.
  • Knowledge of federal and state regulations and standards regarding proper treatment plant operations.
