Piedmont Geriatric Hospital is seeking an enthusiastic, creative, and dedicated individual to serve as a Music Therapist or a Recreation Therapist. The individual in this role will assess patients’ needs, develop and implement treatment plans, provide person-centered group and individual therapeutic activities, and collaborate with the treatment team in developing creative interventions to address patients’ needs.

Purpose: The purpose of this position is to provide patients with quality treatment interventions in order to facilitate therapeutic change. This role will help prepare patients for re-entry into the community, and to improve or maintain functioning in areas of psychological, cognitive, behavioral, emotional, social, and physical needs.

Knowledge, skills, and requirements needed for this position:
  • Knowledge of principles of assessment and ability to modify treatment approaches based on patients’ response to interventions.
  • Ability to prepare written treatment plans with objectives and interventions.
  • Ability to conduct group and individual interventions.
  • Knowledge of the dynamics and processes of a therapeutic relationship and of group therapy.
  • Ability to provide therapeutic experiences that assist the patient to utilize and enhance their strengths, improve coping skills, and foster hope.
  • Effective written and oral communication skills.
  • Knowledge of professional standards of clinical documentation.
  • Knowledge of professional code of ethics and the hospital’s ethical standards.
  • Ability to interact with others in a manner that respects diversity and differences including but not limited to culture, gender, sexual orientation, and spiritual/religious practices.


What is Piedmont Geriatric Hospital?
PGH is a 123-bed, gero-psychiatric hospital, operated by the Virginia Department of Behavioral Health and Developmental Services (DBHDS). PGH is Virginia’s only state Mental Health Facility solely dedicated to evaluation and treatment of persons aged 65 and older. The goal of care is to facilitate discharge to a less restrictive setting by assisting patients to improve and/or maintain their physical, mental and social functioning.

PGH is located in the picturesque rural setting of the Southside region of Virginia. PGH is just 60 miles from the state capital (Richmond), 65 miles from the Blue Ridge Mountains, and 144 miles from the waves of Virginia Beach.

Minimum Qualifications
  • A degree in Music Therapy or Recreation Therapy from an accredited college or university.
  • Current professional certification or certification obtained within 6 months.
  • Experience working in a clinical setting.
  • Experience working with older adults and/or individuals with mental illness.
