Job Summary
NOTE: There are four temporary job vacancies available. One (1) is located in our Bemidji Sign Shop, and two (2) are located in our Bemidji Truck Station, and one in our Northome Truck Station. The season will include dates from approximately May 10 - October 24, 2023 (some flexibility provided with schedule). Some of these vacancies may be filled with Transportation Generalists who have CDL licenses and one year of experience, and others filled with candidates who meet the minimum qualifications of a Laborer General.
Job Duties: Under general supervision, an employee in this class performs daily and routine work road surface maintenance activities to keep the roadways and roadsides safe and in good repair according to MnDOT standards. A position may not include all the work examples given, nor does the list include all that may be assigned. Examples of work for the Bemidji
Roadside Maintenance specific vacancies include but are not limited to:
Function: Roadside Surface/Roadside Maintenance
- Perform all activities required for roadside maintenance - mowing, brush removal, weed control
- Perform all roadway surface maintenance activities - patching, road surface maintenance on bituminous, gravel and concrete surfaces
- Transportation Generalist: Service and make minor repairs to operating equipment Provide traffic control
- Perform basic construction monitoring duties and basic inspection activities
- Perform other duties as assigned
Job Duties: Under general supervision, an employee in this class performs routine traffic signing and maintenance responsibilities to ensure the safety of the traveling public. A position may not include all the work examples given, nor does the list include all that may be assigned. Examples of work for the Bemidji Sign Shop specific vacancies include but are not limited to:
Examples of work for the Bemidji Sign Maintenance specific vacancy includes but is not limited to:
- Installs, repairs, and removes permanent signs and messages
- Installs emergency and temporary signing on detours, construction projects Installs message painting/taping.
- Stakes sign locations. Conducts field sign inspections.
- Transportation Generalist - Transfers and operates the full range of heavy equipment used by MnDOT
- Other duties as assigned
NOTE: The Transportation Generalist incumbent will be subject to drug and alcohol testing; an individual not currently in the random pool must pass a pre-placement drug test for evidence of use of marijuana, cocaine, opiates, phencyclidine (PCP) and amphetamines (MDMA, MDA and MDEA) and acetylmorphine (6-am). The incumbent must also be registered in the Federal Motor Carrier Safety Administration's Commercial Driver's License Drug and Alcohol Clearinghouse.
Qualifications
Minimum Qualifications
Transportation Generalist for Highway and Sign Maintenance:
Valid Class A or B Driver's License and no air brake restriction is required at time of application. May require a Tanker Endorsement within 30 days of hire. PLEASE INDICATE ON YOUR APPLICATION THAT YOU HOLD A CDL LICENSE.
Exam Part 1: The level of experience to perform this job at the Transportation Generalist level can be achieved with:
Experience Roadside Maintenance:
- One (1) year of experience performing activities in snow and ice, soils, road surface maintenance, roadside maintenance, bridge maintenance, signs, or related activities (roadway maintenance, driving commercial vehicles, commercial landscaping, operating heavy equipment, snowplowing or farm experience).
OR
- Education: Successful completion of a Heavy Equipment Operation and Maintenance Program (of at least 60 semester credits; or 90 quarter credits) will substitute for one year of experience.
Experience Sign Maintenance:
- One year of experience performing any of the following: sign installation and maintenance, roadway and roadside maintenance, driving commercial vehicles, operating heavy equipment, farm experience, snowplow operations, road construction, etc.
AND
- Working knowledge of English sufficient to read, write, speak, and understand oral and written information; communicate with employees and the general public in-person or via two-way radio and other electronic devices; and to maintain routine written logs and simple records.
Laborer General Minimum Qualifications:
- Knowledge of methods, tools, and equipment used in maintenance and construction work sufficient to carry out detailed work directions.
- Ability to perform heavy manual labor work sufficient to complete assignments.
- Strength and agility necessary to bend, lift, dig, reach, and load heavy materials.
- Endurance necessary to perform indoor and outdoor tasks under extreme environmental conditions, such as heat, cold, rain, snow, and wind.
- Class D Driver’s License
Preferred Qualifications
- Previous MnDOT experience working as a Laborer, Transportation Associate or Transportation Generalist
Physical Requirements
A pre-placement physical examination is required for these positions. Current employees who have successfully bid or are moving into specific job classifications will be required to complete the pre-employment physical exam. The scope of the physical exam will be limited to whether the employee can safely and effectively perform the essential functions of the job, with or without reasonable accommodation, in compliance with state and federal law.
While performing the duties of this job, the employee may be required to work outside exposed to the weather elements (both hot and cold) on an intermittent basis. The employee will drive a motor vehicle on the roadway and roadsides. Periodically, the employee will walk on even and uneven sloping ground. The employee must frequently and continually rotate through various body positions (standing, twisting, bending, sitting, kneeling, squatting). The employee will operate machinery and equipment (using vision and hearing) under varying temperatures. The employee may need to move between 75 to 100 pounds by pushing, pulling, lifting, and carrying. The employee must be able to wear and use personal protective equipment to protect the head, eyes, hearing, respiration, visibility, and feet from injury.
